Noticed this rubber gasket was in the middle of the shaft. Any idea which end it should be pressed against? Circled in yellow below.

And they make a little spring clip that will hold the metal plate in place that you can add.

The rubber seal installs against the coupler at the steering gear, and as noted the metal retainer that holds it is missing.

The following image shows the parts of the coupler disassembled:

The following images show a new Chrysler coupler kit with my coupler, with the later higher temperature orange seal, the coupler with the kit installed, and the shaft with the coupler installed on the steering gear in my car.

Man what an absolute wealth of knowledge! Thank you for this. Now I’m on hunt to find that metal retainer

When I overhauled the coupler I also added the spring clamp that really helps keep it together. Made a very noticeable difference in making the play in the steering pretty much disappear. Hope the pictures help.

Got it! I’m about to purchase this kit. Probably a silly question but before I close it all up do I pack the coupling body with marine grease?

I used hi temp wheel bearing grease and it works fine. That large spring clip is really nice and won’t break or come loose. It’s challenging to put on but one and done.

Marine grease is not required. It's just what I am using. Chrysler specified a Multi-Purpose grease, NLGI Grade 2 E.P. Any wheel bearing grease, or similar good quality grease, will work.
