Noticed this rubber gasket was in the middle of the shaft. Any idea which end it should be pressed against? Circled in yellow below.

Man what an absolute wealth of knowledge! Thank you for this. Now I’m on hunt to find that metal retainerThe rubber seal installs against the coupler at the steering gear, and as noted the metal retainer that holds it is missing.

Got it! I’m about to purchase this kit. Probably a silly question but before I close it all up do I pack the coupling body with marine grease?When I overhauled the coupler I also added the spring clamp that really helps keep it together. Made a very noticeable difference in making the play in the steering pretty much disappear. Hope the pictures help.
