Making the HEI conversion SUPER simple!

From my experience the heat transfer paste is the most important part. Using the dielectric grease that usually comes with a module does nothing to help facilitate the heat transfer. That is why so many aftermarket modules burned out. They were simply overheating.
I really like this design and think you are on to something. Thanks for shared.

That has been an on going conversation for years. The two SMP lx301t modules i got came with a clear packet of " paste" it's very thin and clear I can see how people can call it die electric grease? To be honest it sure doest look like thermal paste.

The AC Delco units come with a white packet. This resembles thermal paste.

The AC unit is also completely different from the SMP module. The mounting holes are slightly bigger and identical. Where as the SMP units have a mounting hole that clearly the grounding point as well as a tab that protrudes off the side ( also ground ) . The AC unit grounds threw the entire base of the module the SMP relies on the mounting hole which should be grounded via the screw.

I had a post some where describing the 3 main family of modules out in circulation . ( and how they are being made cheaper and cheaper ) Then of course there is the aftermarket stuff as well.

At the end of the day I buy my own thermal paste and don't use what comes in the package.

I've worked in parts for 30 years. In my experience the modules that I have sold over the years all came with dielectric grease. I always tried to inform the buyers to get actual heat transfer paste. Some listened some I had to warranty because they didn't listen.
 
Sorry, I don't believe a manufacturer would be so stupid that he/she knows how to make the module...but doesn't know the difference between HTP & diel grease...& risking the cost of warranty returns.
 
Back on topic .

Some discussion with some fellow members brought on one more design.

For those looking for more "stealth" or cleaner look. This latest design completely covers HEI module itself and resembles more of a typical ECU box.

This design uses a 2x4" 1/8 baseplate of alumium with 2 - 40 x 40 x 10 mm heatsinks on top to ensure no over heating problems .

The two Allen head screws are threaded into the alumium plate to provide very sturdy mounting points for the module.

A grouding post is located beside the OEM plug to keep wires nice and neat.

Underside , wires are labeled for hei module pins.

This design is slightly more difficult to do the initial mounting of the module inside the box but once it's installed it will provided a nice clean look to be mounted where ever you like.

The main take away from all my designs is the ease of install, using the factory oem plug.


I will be making an official for sale post . Shortly. Unfortunately I need to figure out shipping outside outside of the country with the new rules and Canada post currently on strike....

Looking good. For best thermal transfer from the aluminum plate to the heatsink, for the final revision, you'll want to polish that aluminum plate to a mirror finish on the outer surface. :)
