I want to put a set of SS springs on the coronet. Call me ignorant but i can't find any instructions on the installation. I do know they will require new hangers. Anyone already go through this exercise?

Easier to remove rear shackle from old springs first, then remove the 4 nuts holding the old front spring hanger to the frame. You can remove the rear end with the old springs still attached, or remove it first before tackling the springs. I did mine with the rear end still attached to the springs, at least until the rear shackles were removed. Car sitting with jack stands under frame, using floor jack to lift rear end to add or remove tension to the springs until I found the point closest to neutral tension on rear shackle to make it easier to remove from the spring.

New SS springs should have front eye already installed, mine came with new polyurethane bushings to install in the rear in both the spring and the shackle mount in the frame. Once you get everything installed (reverse order) you should check your pinion angle in relation to the driveline, as it might change with the new springs. Also, the new front hangers have 2 holes to mount the front of the spring. I've tried both, and prefer the upper hole, since my car sat too high in the rear with the lower hole.

Been through this as well. New extended front hangers - I too used the upper hole to bring the height of the rear of the car down. I use jack stands under car frame and under the rear end, then remove u-bolts. Once the new springs and hangers are in (but not torqued down, only snugged up), then use a jack to lower the rear to the springs and install u-bolts (only snug). Set the car down and give it a couple of bounces to settle the suspension, then torque the hardware to specs.

Thanks-good info-I can do this without disconnecting brake lines as the brakes were just redone.

Don't mean to steal the thread but for everyone above, what brand of springs do have or who did you purchase them through? Also 3400lbs, 3600lbs, or other? I want the front and rear to sit up a bit. Thanks.

I'm using the 002/003 SS springs. At this point in time, I'd gladly trade them for a set of XHD 982/983 springs. The more I drive on the street with them, the more I don't care for them. It doesn't help that I'm using leaf spring sliders instead of a shackle either. If I hold onto the SS springs until next year when the drag strip opens, I may try out slicks and see how well the SS springs work. I may like them more after that. ;)

Manifold, how much did they raise your car up?

They came on the car when I bought it, so can't provide a comparison from a stock spring. When I bought it, they were installed in the bottom holes of the front extended hangers and still used the stock shackle hanger which was way out of whack (the bottom of the shackle was towards the front of the car, vice the correct direction of towards the rear). This goes right along with the information you're given when using SS springs in a B-body (that the shackle will have to be relocated).

Since I was swapping out the 8.25 for a 8.75, I redid everything. I had to relocate the spring perches as it was (the E-body 8.75 I was using had been set up for an A-body), so I started from scratch. I didn't care for the sky high rear end look, so I moved the front spring eye to the upper hole. I ditched the shackle for sliders and welded up mounts for them. I took my measurements and set the pinion where I wanted it, and welded on new perches. So, it all worked out after some work.

From what I've read, it's hit or miss with folks getting lift out of an XHD spring. The extra heavy duty springs are biased (as are SS springs) and modeled after the stock springs of a 440 or Hemi car. You may not get lift, but you'll have less spring wrap.

That's true. Don't want the back to be raised up but I don't want it sagging either. For the street, I'd go with the XHD springs and if you want more ride height, have them rearched.

Springs

I installed the 002/003 springs on my Dart and it raised the rear 5 1/2 inches.
On my 65 Belvedere the 456/457 's raised the rear 4 3/4 inches.
Both way too high for my taste. The Dart is low HP (less than 250 rear wheel)so I added 2" lowering blocks. Works well but I would like to know if they would take any real HP.
Didn't want to try with the B-Body.

What are the lowering blocks made of?

I'm wanting to put SS Springs on my 1962 Plymouth Sport Fury 413 and I know different front hangers are required. My front hangers were welded in conjunction with some frame boxing/ stiffening. Where can I get the needed dimensions for cutting and re-welding the front hangers for the SS Springs?
Thanks,

I put SS springs on my 64 Ply, basicly just slipping them in, just like they were made for the car. Only thing I had to do was find a pair of stock shackles, and toss the 8 inchers that were there. Pretty sure the springs only lift a few inches over the stock set-up. (Can't measure until motor and trans are in)

That was with using the stock front hangers.

I like to remove the spring with taking out the axle U bolts first and then the front hanger second, Then move to the shackles last. Installation goes front hangers first while attached to the spring, rear shackles second, axle last.

The car is supported on jack stands and choked. The axle also gets a set of jack stands.

So, Miller, you are saying the front hangers do no have to be relocated for the super stock springs?

Thanks,

Man, now you've got me trying to clear the cobwebs. It was quite awhile back since I put mine on. I do remember removing the front hangers, maybe for cleaning the parts.
Kinda recall that on installing the springs, the installed angle of the rear shackles need to be right, to get the correct spring 'wind-up' when you launch.

I'll take a look at mine...but if all fails, any doubt, do as the instructions tell you. I sure don't want to led you down the wrong path.

Yup...just looked at mine. Stock one hole front hangers. But, I'll toss in that those springs are usually a slap in deal on 62-64's. Once I got a pair of stock rear hangers, it just bolted in.

Alot depends on each and every car, since most two aren't alike. It goes with what your after for your setup that you want.

Though I'm not 100% sure about this, but I do believe A body cars are the only cars that do not require a front hanger change since the SS springs are A body sized.

All other bodies require a front hanger change.
