I'll be first to admit I know nothing about 440's, was hoping some of the more knowledgeable peeps here could cast their eye over this engine?

I know it is hard to give an opinion on an engine from just these pics but even simple stuff like 'that's out of a truck and is.....' or looks to be a 72 motor, they are......'

Sorry if its a big ask and impossible to do much with, if it was a damned Cleveland I'd be all over it!!

There's casting numbers and casting dates that identify the parts. The casting date on the block is on the right side of the engine towards the back and should precede the year of vehicle is was in. A 1970 block would have a casting date sometime in 69 and it would have an 'E' on the ID pad at the top left of the block at the water pump ports. The casting number on top of the heads will identify what they are. A xxxx906 head were produced from 68-70. He's advertising the heads as having 81.5 cc and that's pretty close to what a closed chambered head would be. 440 high performance engines in 1967 came with the xxxx915 heads and would be around that cc. You need to contact him and ask for casting numbers from the heads and casting date from the block and what is on the ID pad at the top so it can be identified.

Sounds like the seller doesn't know much about it to me. "Looking at it, all this engine needs is a gasket set.....blah blah blah. " Rattle can rebuild if you ask me.

Cast crank motor. Probably needs a rebuild. Would be WAY to much money for it in the states, but don't know about downunder

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input.

Price wise, because there are so few of them out here, it's in the ballpark. I would really prefer a block from 68/9 and one that's ready to rumble as I am soooo over working on cars, now I just want to enjoy driving them.

Getting an engine from the states is looking more and more attractive, more to choose from and more bang for my buck.

the number on the block says it's a late'75-'79 block,(all the same with that number) it's a cast crank,it has an oil pan out of a truck (rear sump, w/drain plug on the side), those are actually decent blocks, the 60's blocks aren't as great as everybody thinks, and there is no such thing as the late model blocks being "thinner wall", you could easily build a 600 hp motor w/a cast crank.

Oh, I'm also a '69 Coronet owner, "Cheers"!

Ya know, I didn't even think about mousing over the other pics. Yeah, truck motor and even still has the truck brackets on it and I'm not afraid of Mom's cast cranks either. Heck, I think mopar cast cranks are probably on par with GM forged cranks lol

You know you're right about the GM comment,I've never heard of any Mopar cast crank failures, but I've heard of plenty of GM steel crank failures!

I've seen one Mopar cast crank failure but after talking looking into it, the guy had a neutral balanced converter on a internal balanced 400. I asked him if he didn't notice the vibration and he said yeah, but I thought that was normal LOL. Other than that, I've seen a lot of spun bearings and a few balancers ready to fall off but no other broken cranks on a Mopar.

Landy used to say a cast 440 crank was good if you weren't twisting it 6000 and weren't exceeding 500hp......by much anyway lol

Is the Scat cast stroker crank on par with Mopar cast cranks?
