My brother in law sold his 71 Cuda and he has a 340 block hes been saving for more years then i can count and remember the Cuda he took it from, a 74... He wants 300 bucks for it and i have no idea what that would be worth coming out of that year, Is anyone on hear that may know what he should ask or is this reasonable? I do remember it ran when he took it out but did smoke like freight train. I did tell him to get me the numbers off the block and i would do some checking but its only been a few days and i haven't got them yet, I don't want it for myself, i just said i could put it up for sale here in PA. he lives in Ohio. Thanks..
 
Depends on the bore if it's still stock and only needs to go .030 over. A 70-71 would be worth more I would think but it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay. Is it too much to ask for? I don't think so....
 
They said that year is a cast crankshaft. On my 74 340 engine it was forged and I was surprised. Machine shop said that they had not seen many cast 340 cranks. Price is about right for rebuildable engine.
 
Now i wonder if it is a 340! im glad i put this in, if he ever sends me the numbers ill find out exactly what engine it is, i have a sheet in my garage for SB and the BB engines, I remember the car well and the way that thing burnt oil i just figured it was, back then it was old i guess but never really thought about it.. I know he told me it came out of a 74 and hes wrong on the year, or someone changed it. There was a garage that's still here but at that time he sold gallons of used and re-processed oil by the jug, a buck a gallon and truthfully he bought a gallon every other day for that thing, he most probably is going to be very unhappy hearing this, but thanks guys, i didn't know, and i don't think hes going to be happy knowing lol...

I've seen a big drop off in 340 prices. Rebuildable cores were going for $1,200+ a couple of years ago, and now rebuilt ones don't command that much. I would say $300 is a good price these days.

Seems to me a good 340 block would be in demand and I almost never see them up for sale.
 
Nothing is really in demand these days. The guy who welded the spring pads on my 8.75 rear has two 340s that he's been trying to unload for quite a while. Most folks who are upgrading engines are going from small black to big block.
 
I really don't know how much they are in demand and i have no idea what its worth, seems he is busy and don't have the time getting the numbers to me and i think im done unless he gets me the info so i can get them in hear and maybe someone would want it. I do thank you all and if he gets the time to let me know (It has to be he's busy), ill let you guys know, it may be worth every bit of 300 and maybe not.. im no expert, im in it for the fun, helping him and maybe learning more!
 
and in 73 the crank was shot peened, not forged...
Could you 'splain that? I know what shot peening is and you can shot peen a forging. It's a process and not a particular material. If a crank isn't forged, then it's a casting but both can be shot peened.
 
Just like the GM 350 replaced the 327 as the go to small block for stroking to achieve bigger cubic inches...so has the Mopar 360 replaced the 340.

Yup, the 360 took the place of the 340 for 74 in E bodies but did any 340's make they way into the early 74 model cars like the 440 made it's way into some B bodies? Also, imo, the down side to a 360 was it's smaller than a 340 bore. Upside is the 360 bore is 4" and low cost piston availability is almost unlimited....or it used to be.
 
The real "big" difference between the 340 and 360 in truth is the oil pan. If the car you were putting it in could not fit a newer style oil pan then the 340 was your best bet. All of this is before factory roller cams were thought of.
 
Heck, he's family. Offer him a $100. If it's had used oil put through it, it may be beyond dumping 3-4000 in it to rebuild it.
 
Well guys im not even sure if he wants to sell it, ive left two messages to get him to send me the numbers, nothing back, I don't want it myself even for 100.00 ... I just don't have a use and there is to many other parts and things i need for my car im working on, and i have a 383 for it, He has had this for years and moves it from wherever he is living, just two places that i know of and its kept out of any weather, that i know but it is a bare bones block and i already have two other SB engines here and the one in my 73 which wont ever have anything in it but a SB, its all i need for a fun drive in the summer... If he ever gets ahold of me ill put the numbers in here but im not going to try any more, I think i already did! lol...
 
I have a 73 340 standard bore block, heads and intake if anyone needs one. I looked for years to find a good one, then i buy a crate motor and then I find one!:angryfire: anyway it is loaded for Carlisle if anyone is interested?

Well guys i have been doing the yard work before the rain coming gets here! So being i was going to share the numbers so everyone knows what this is anyway, here you go, just got them...

These are the ones he sent, says 340 at the end, if it is and they stopped them in 73, car years wrong or someone changed the engine but yard work continues, break over! lol...

Around here a 340 block will pull $400-$600 easily depending on condition. Tip that up to 1-2K if the machining/clean work is done to them.The T/A and AAR 340 blocks were a little different block than the run of the mill 340, and are worth a lot more. The T/A/AAR heads were different as well, and had different adjustable rockers for the offset pushrod holes. If you look under the casting date and clock on the block, you should be able to find a thin machined pad, right at the bottom of the block with a VIN Stamp. T/A or not, 340 blocks are a bit hard to come by around here. You can find them, but they are not like the other LA small blocks they tossed in everything. 340's were a performance motor for a performance car, and that was it. That's why they are not piled up lying around for easy picking. Hope it helps.
