New guy from Canada

Wow, how did I miss this build last February? Okay busted, I was steelhead fishing the Clearwater River. Really like the direction that you've gone, is that a Gear Vendors overdrive? What's your take on that.

And a heated garage to boot, you are living.

Thanks Boise68!

The Gear Vendors overdrive is a great addition considering I'm running 4.30 gears. With my 29" tall tires I can do 110km/hr (68mph) at 2800 RPM. Without the Gear Vendors, my engine spins at 3200 RPM to run the same speed. The drawbacks are pounding out your floorboards to make it fit, having to shorten your driveshaft and sort out driveline vibrations with the change. Once you're through that, it's wonderful.

Yes, I always wanted a heated garage. It took me 15 years to get one, then another 7 to finally get around to fixing it up. Now it's perfect for working through the cold Canadian winters!

More to come when I get through some of the small hickups of a new build.

Here's a quick video of the car as it rolled out of my garage earlier this summer. A lot has changed since then, but thought I'd send you guys an update.

So a quick update. A lot has been done on my car since my last picture posts, but I'm afraid I neglected to take the time to track that stuff well.

When I was first taking my car out for a spin I found power steering fluid on my k-frame and the side of the engine. I assumed it was the power steering pump, so I removed it countless times, rebuilt it with new o-rings countless times and was almost through until I finally had my 6 year old son turn the steering while the engine was running. Here's what it looked like from up top...

I slid under the car to check it out...

Looking at the nose of the steering box from under the front bumper of the car. No wonder I missed it all along. Just a small strip of paint missing.

The fix was a replacement steering box. While I didn't want to spend the money, I was looking for something smaller that wouldn't hit my headers. I found a Borgeson steering box (www.bergmanautocraft.com) that was not only smaller, but lighter too. Removing the old steering box was a challenge to say the least, I had to remove the header, power steering pump and jack the engine up as much as I could to so I could squeeze the steering box out.

I installed the Borgeson steering box as quickly as possible and it went in without too much trouble at all.

Here the headers are still unhooked so I could get the box lined up.

So a year has passed and I ended up pulling the engine and balancing it. There was quite a vibration coming from the used engine I bought and it turns out that the crank was nearly 1 pound lighter than the pistons and rods!

I also decided to change to a new set of Indy 440-1 heads that would make more power and lower the compression a wee bit to make the car more of a street driver. The heads were CNC ported so I know they'll perform.

Here's a quick video of the car back together.

Man that's a sweet car! Glad you got it running right now! Have a great summer!

HI 65Hemi,
Darn, I wish I had seen this sooner... I completely missed the event and didn't know about it until today. I hope it was good. I'll be out to a local cruise night this coming Sunday if the weather holds out.

So how do you like the Fast EFI?
Hi Gpuller,
I have to say that I really like the EFI now that it's up and running. It wasn't exactly as easy for me to install, but I was also doing a complete rebuild with a different motor, transmission electrical and a ton of other parts - especially after the car sat for 9 years.

Now that the car is together, it allows me to tweak timing and fuel ratios on the fly. That being said, because it's a self learning system, it likes consistency and some time to correct things. It's still much nicer to start the car without pumping the throttle - cold or hot. My new build is a completely different one than I had in the past - so I haven't a clue if it is better or worse for mileage or performance than a carburetor. Maybe one day I'll do a swap a the track to see which does better...

I'm still tweaking a wee bit each time I drive it - and having fun - so I'd suggest that anyone who wants to get away from carburation should go EFI in some way or another.

Thanks for the feedback. At some point I plan on switching to EFI. Just need to figure which one.
