I'm thinking about making a sheet metal intake for my 440. To get the runners to the tuned length I need, there is not much clearance left under the hood. What would you guys think is the absolute minimum acceptable carb to hood clearance on a six pack hood?

My drag car has about 4" above the front carb. I added an air entrance to the carb that reduced that distance to about 1.5". Slowed it down about .10

Here is what I setup for my car. Spectre intake fiberglass hood. So far works for me.

If you are going to fab a sheet metal intake, then get a big hood scoop.
When I installed my Dominator with an HVH CNC 4150 to 4500 carb adapter I ran out of toom with my standard 66 Hemi Scoop.
This Harwood Scoop solved ALL of my clearance problems and even allowed me to run a big K&N Filter.

Hi Mike,
Sorry, this is a different subject but your in box is full.
Do you know how much horse power your 505 is making? My 65 is under construction and is insured with Hagerty but, they told me they will not cover the car when completed because of the HP (765)? I'm thinking you must be in the same HP neighborhood? Did they ask you the HP level? Thanks.

The stud of my carb and the air cleaner come within about 1/2" of my scoop. You can see how little room the scoop gives in the middle as thats about all I have since the carb stud comes to about the flat surface of the hood. I have a 14" hole in the hood so I have some clearance. I use a solid steel eng mount and a chain on the drivers side. After reading this it now has me curious if it would run any better with more room. But it does run fine eng wise this close as it never misses once jetted right. Ron
