So, at what age should we STOP taking on project cars?

Like most people here, I have several project cars that could easily take me into my 80's to get done, but at that point I may as well fit them with handicap controls because I have no idea if I could even drive at that age.....So, like the post says, when do we stop?
I've never seen a nursing home with a two post lift, so I assume at some point, you really can't take it with you.....
The thought of being 80 and not being able to turn wrench on a rusted-out 2016 Hellcat bothers me now!

I don't think it's at a particular age, but rather when you just can't swing the wrenches, get down (& up) to slide underneath it, and it's just not fun any more - IMHO. I'll be 71 this Sunday and haven't given up yet despite the Rice Krispy knees (snap, crackle, & pop), and other issues.

My dad is 74 this year and continues to work on his trucks. I think it's what keeps him motivated besides golf. I'll keep at it as long as my health & wallet lets me.

if you plan for it and have good kids ,I don't believe there is a "cut off age" . I have a single level home and plan on staying here till I die (touch wood) my dad lived in his home till he took the turn that killed him at 86 and my grandfather died in his sleep in his home( 93) . I come from a line of independent old farts that wouldn't be caught dead in an "aged care facility " besides they wouldn't be able to put up with a cranky old f*ck like myself :lol:I'm planning a shed upgrade soon and I will be doing everything I can to make life easy for myself "down the line"

I just turned 61, this is pretty much what I'm thinking, except I don't play golf.

Me either, I just suck at golf and gives me more stress than I need. My dad is or was nearly a scratch golfer and I hated golfing with him, so I gave it up and took up fishing!

I cant wait to see how bad I suck at golf!!

Happy birthday!! Wow! Daytona 500 is on too!!

It's not the physical age. I'm only 29 and I've been fighting with major back problems for the past 5 years I stopped buying projects because of this if I get fixed then I can start again but I can't get up down under over brake bolts free ect so I can't technically do them now but after my next surgery who knows maybe I can start again doc says no but we won't know till we get there

I'm the same age dealing with the same issues for 2 years now. We may never be lifting transmissions out on our own but I have hope that the docs can do something which allows us enjoy this hobby again one day. Best of luck to you because we are too young to be dealing with this ****!

im 57,still taking on projects, problem is i cant finsh them,i still think im young and still think i can build and race cars,my mind might say i can keep doing it,but my body dont

I told my wife back in 2005," this is my last project" and then again 2008 , and now have another to do when I get ready. I'll be 71 this Summer, so the next project will get a lot farmed out ! Knee replacements and bad back on top of all the other stuff......................MO

It used to be that I went out searching for project cars. Since 2005, I have bought or was given nearly 20 A body cars, a 68 Satellite station wagon, a few trucks and a C body with a 440.
The past few years, these cars have found me. I get calls from people looking to get out of the hobby, wanting to sell me their unfinished projects. I wish these guys had more desireable cars though. 3 of the last 4 cars were 65 A body cars. I know some people like them but I just see them as a project to build and sell.
I have a few projects in line. A 71 Duster I plan to make a 340 clone. A 64 Valiant convertible. 65 Dart 2 door. I recently got a call from a guy wanting to sell a 72 Duster.

The cars I currently have, should be more than enough to outlast my ambition.

you guys in your 70s are a major inspiration......I just turned 52, had a stent installed almost 6 months ago (95% blockage) but feel great.... if I'm not building a car (several at a time), I am doing something to upgrade the shop (a 20 year work in progress)......... as I get older, I'd like to think I work a smarter, not harder.....I cant wait to wind down the customer work, and only focus on my own junk....dreaming, I know...... I try to accomplish something every day, and hope to for at least 20 more years, God willing.

Did you say 68 WAGON!

I'll keep at it as long as I'm enjoying it so who knows.

I guess when i can't hold a wrench any more, tried playing golf, stupid little white ball goes in the woods every time.

golf is for people who can't build cars........and I'd rather catch a bass on my day off
