Is anyone using a Brake booster power that gets its power from a Power Steering pump?

If so, what brand and have you any photos to share please? Looking at an alternative to sucking off my vacuum port. :)

Hydroboost.
GM used it in their Astro Van line. I read somewhere that guys had used GM stuff to adapt to Mopar brake systems.
The purists scoff at it but with the sheer volume of GM Rear wheel drive vehicles, there is bound to be some stuff they did that is worth considering. The 700R4/4L60E transmissions are one thing...

I owned a chevy one ton dually with hydro boost. Driving to pick up friends for a trip to the airport, i got off the freeway, pulled off the offramp and something went kaching at about 30 mph. I thought i might have hit something as i saw something rolling swiftly away. As i tried to come to a stop at the next light i realized i didn't have brakes or steering. I muscled the 6000 lb truckinto a gas statiom driveway to avoid rear-ending the cars at the light, went thru a set of pumps and barely missed killing some poor guy filling his tank. Finally got it stopped with e-brake.
Turns out the balancer pulley center broke out, throwing the monobelt, disabling steering AND BRAKES, making me an unguided missile.
When i went to replace the lower pulley, it seemes that gm had redesigned and re-redesigned that part because of failures
So, in my opinion, if you are willing to risk your life and others on a fanbelt, buy a hydroboost.

94-04 mustang gt's used it as well. I know several folks who have those and know of no problems.

It makes perfect sense to run hydro-boost if you have low vacuum but want unbeatable braking especially if you are already running a power steering pump. I've installed a system on my 65 Fury that I picked up at the auto recyclers for $100 and it's been on the car for three years now without incident. Mine came off a 2001 GM 2500 pickup and the reason I chose that one was because the truck had drum out back and disk up front just like the car. These things work great and as a safety precaution, give you three complete stops even if you drop the power steering belt because they have a side mounted reserve capsule. I didn't even have to change my pedal ratio when installing but if you go this route it'd always a good idea to measure the pivot points on the donor vehicle's brake arm just in case. When completely installed the cost was around $275 with new pressure lines and mounting bracket.

Worked with a mechanic 30 years ago that installed that type of system on his 70 nova. Stopped on a dime and looked pretty slick if I remember correctly. I think he said it was from a 1 ton truck.

It is just a thought that I had....I don't want to give too much vacuum away just to have the luxury of being able to stop at will. :D
Kiwi, I am a big fan of hydroboost. It's in my '96 Mustang as burntorng70 mentioned. I have had 380,000 miles of flawless operation & only replaced the p/s pump once, for no good reason other than I was installing an new motor too. I've heard of some Mopars being adapted to hydroboost, though I have not done it. It sure does make sense if you have a big cam.

Yatzee, maybe gm re-re-reengineered the safety side capsule because it wasn't safe the way they first built it. Mine was an 88 and i SURE AS HELL DID NOT get one safe stop! And i dont think any manufacturer is still using it.

The Ram 2500’s use hydro boost braking. They work rather well.

Nfaq( not frequently asked question). If my power steering belt falls off, do i crash?
Ans. Maybe..
A thousand m&ms in a bowl. One WILL kill you. How many do you eat?

I had sex with many women without wearing a rubber and never got drippy dick.
Sometimes luck is on your side, sometimes not.

Poor M&M analogy (Russian Roulette), there is a known 1 chance in X to die. Eat an M&M, pull the trigger? Most people wouldn't.
But everyday driving, there is not a known chance to die. Tires fail everyday for one reason or another, and people crash. Does that stop you from drivng? Poor maintenance kills people every year. Loose lug nuts, there goes the wheel/tire, happens. Brakes fail because people do not maintain their car. Alternators can feeze up and stop the entire sepentine belt system, stops the engine, and locks up the tires. Should one stop driving because any one part could fail? If that's the case, then I have cases of foil hats for sale.

Never seen an engine stop cause a belt broke.

Look guys, i get it! People want their cake and eat it too. Lots of people want great braking along with their hi-po cam. Im just trying to give my opinion and personal experience.
I know there must be hundreds of thousands of hydroboost systems out there that have been perfectly functioning, but i have had two trucks with them and BOTH have failed, one thru no fault of my own, one possibly due to maintenance issues. My diesel 3/4 ton had an idler freeze and shred the belt in the fan resulting in a very uncomfortable ride down a freeway offramp, hoping the e-brake would work.
It was a new-to-me truck but had a lot of miles. Did i do routine maintenance on the idler? No, but who does. I do NOW, because i know what can happen.
Did i stop driving the diesel? No, but i know what the risk is. I accept the risk, just like everybody else on the road, because there IS a known chance to die, but it is slim enough that people take that risk.
There is a knwn chance to die in everything we do as humans, we just choose not to let it make us crawl under a rock and wait.
I'm just trying to let you know what i think the risk is .
