The Willomet Charger

Love all the craftsmanship in this build, excellent work! Seeing builds like this gets me itching to start another....
Thank you! The details are a lot of fun. Whatever you start next, I’ll be very interested to watch. Your build thread was one of the first I read on this site, and helped me figure out the direction I wanted to go on mine.

Wow, I had no idea but glad to hear. My next project is a 72 Satellite for my daughter so probably not anything crazy, maybe a modern drivetrain?

Passenger interior plate is fit and cleco’d.

Rails are just a tad bit over 7” tall at the crease.

It’s not overkill if you plan to drive it hard.

Made some adjustments to the inner and interior plates to simplify the overall design and eliminate a 9” section where two 1/8” plates were stacked. This adds about 1.5 lbs of lightness.

Now it’s just the right amount of overkill.

That's some pretty metal/fab work there

Much appreciated. It’s great to indulge in the details, even though few folks will see it.

Tonight’s process:
Fine fitting the top plates, which consumes a crapload of time to get the open corner welds set just right.

On the plus side, I did lay down some TIG welds on the passenger rail, and I’m very pleased when them. I’m really digging on the control and precision I can get with the Furick FUPA.

First pass with .045 wire.

It was our third record-setting day in a row in Dallas - 109F today. Here’s how I celebrated.

First, let me begin by saying that you do AWESOME work. That being said, I gave you a RED X because putting an LS in that car is an abomination. Just MO.
I’m not up on internet lingo, and had to google “MO.” It confuses me why you spelled out a five syllable word, but abbreviated “Morbidly Obese.”

Thank you for the compliment. Stick around, and keep the feedback coming.

IMHO if your getting your nickers in a knot about this build having a different engine, maybe you should stick to the restoration thread where you wont get hurt feelings.

No hurt feelings here, just expressing MO...my opinion. I think that the man does excellent work, some of the nicest fabrication I've seen in a long time. I also think that with all of that great work, he is ruining it by putting a Chevy engine in it. AGAIN...MY opinion.
And who in the hell says knickers (not nickers) in 2018. LOL

Sincerely, thank you. My favorite part of any build is the metal fab - custom or otherwise. I’ll cruise a lot of build threads up to the point folks start paint and interior. To me, the care taken up to that point tends to separate good cars from great cars.

I’m fine with (and not at all surprised by) a dislike for my engine choice, but it’s quite a stretch to say the car would be “ruined” by it. By contrast, without finding its way to my shop, the car could have easily remained a patchwork of fiberglass and bondo and rattle can primer. It would sit in a field, slowly returning to the earth.

The only way this car could truly be ruined would be to let it sit and rot, never finish it, and never drive it.

David

Great build!
Is your pup a Healer?
Thank you. Harriet is a red heeler and pit bull mix. She was a stray that wandered up to the shop about two years ago, and has been a part of the family ever since. She’s a great pup, and something of a mascot for the shop.

Your car. Build how you want and put whatever engine you want.
I'll keep watching the metal fab. I always like seeing builds outside the normal.
I'm doing a ls1 swap in my friends BMW. I just built his stainless exhaust this weekend. I am learning to weld stainless and so far its not going great. Luckily he isn't that concerned about having perfect welds.I torched it as most experienced TIG welders would say.LOL
Nice Work!

Thanks man. TIG welding is so sensitive to fitup, I really had to up my game before getting comfortable welding thinner stuff. While I haven't invested in a dual flow regulator just yet, I did borrow one to do some cutouts on a friend's CTS-V. Flooding the cavity with argon added quite a bit of puddle control. Also, I still struggle with torch angle discipline when I'm out of position, especially when I'm using the #26. Much easier with the #9. Keep at it, and practice on every piece of scrap you can get a hold of.

I spent a lot of time Sunday fitting up plates, prepping rails, welding closed the remaining flanges, and testing to make sure there wouldn't be any interference between the UCA hardware and the newly expanded rail section.

I'm just taking my time, fitting up, and prepping for a big weld day.

Milestone. One plate tacked. So much prep and fine fitting prior to this.
