Cars That Made You Want One

[] The 70's Prostock Mopars got me. Couldn't afford anything but my old Dart at the time. A friend had bought an AAR Cuda and it had me drooling. It was in 72 and I was food shopping at Path Mark after my shift and after midnight;(they were open all night). Well, in the parking lot was a 383 / 4 spd. Sublime Challenger RT. Well, while checking out, something had no price on it and the cashier asked if I really needed it because hunting down the price with a limited staff was a PIA. I said I can do without that but what I really want is that green Challenger in the parking lot! She said that it belonged to one of the night crew guys and she would page him for me. She did and even though the car was not for sale I talked him into selling it to me. I never had a loan before so my brother co-signed for me but 2 days later the car was mine! Still one of my favorites today, wish I still had it!

Great story.

Fell in love with Superbirds when I was a kid had the STP and also a race car for my AFX track and always wanted one like Petty's race car .
Lamborghini Countach like the poster on my wall growing up .
Dodge Charger loved the Dukes of Hazzard .

My Dad sold new cars from 1968 to his passing in 1995. During the musclecar heyday, he worked at a Chrysler/Plymouth dealer and then a Ford dealer, both in Sacramento, CA, a Dodge dealer in Roseville, CA and a Chevrolet dealer in Sacramento, CA.
In some cases, he got to use a car from the lot as his personal car. He liked big comfortable cars so he brought home Furys, Galaxies, Caprices, etc. In the mid to late 70s he sold mostly Chevrolets. He leased Mom a 78 Z28. She LOVED that car but once the lease was up, Dad turned it in and bought her a 79 Z28. Sometimes he'd get a 1/2 ton pickup for himself. He had a couple short bed 454 trucks. Yeah, they were low compression smog engines but they'd still smoke the tires. I was heading the way of Chevrolet until I saw THIS:

I don't recall seeing a 68-70 Charger in person before I saw this show. Once I saw that car on TV, it was love on 4 wheels. I had to have one someday. It took 20 years from the time I first saw that first episode until I bought my 1970 Charger.

Well, when my dad came home with this car, it was love at first site for my brother and I. Sadly, it was sold in 1971 because my parents got laid off, and our whole family has been looking for it ever since. 6 bbl,4 speed super TrakPak convertible, can’t get much better than that for inspiration. Here is also a copy of his timeslip from the 1970 Summer Nationals at Martin, Mi. Running in E Pure Stock, and just as it came through the dealership. There is much speculation as to how the car got that fast, Dad had it ordered through a coworkers husband, who was a bigwig at Chrysler.

Now, I have been hankering for a 70 Roadrunner ever since then, so I finally decided to put my GTX up for trade for one. It took a lot of patient looking and waiting, but one was right under my nose, just 8 miles from my Moms house. I now have all the car I need, and can die happy!

Same boat as Kern dog. Grew up in a family of Mopar enthusiasts, and fell in love with the General. When it came time to get my first car, the first choice that came to mind was a 69 Camaro, since that was what was in all the car mags at the time. Then, the greatest thing happened. TNN run DoH reruns at 4:00 pm cst.

I miss TNN.

About time for the broken record song from one of the 3 Amigos in 3.2.1....

Holy Crap...12.30 for a STOCK 6 Barrel car??

Holy Crap...12.30 for a STOCK 6 Barrel car??

We didn’t even have a garage, and what you see in the picture was the way it was run, but Dad would raise the torsion bars to displace the weight to the back a little.

This is easy. Watching NASCAR in the 60'-70's, I wanted what the King Richard Petty was driving ( except '69 ). As well as Buddy Baker, Bobby Isaac, etc. So it was a Charger and/or Road Runner. So I got both.

For me it wasn't a car per se, but a book. Mighty Mopars. I got it for Christmas when I was 11 or 12 and showing an interest in cars. I read it front to back all the time and the pictures of the cars and motors set me on my way.

Somewhat connected were the old Plymouth and Dodge ads I ran across in my dad's old magazines. Man I can remember cutting them out and pinning them up in my room. I still get a kick out of seeing the ads today. One I vividly remember is a two page, green 1968 GTX ad.

Anybody from the Pittsburgh Pa. area would know this one from the 60's-70's. The STEEL CITY WEDGE.That's why I have 3 early "B's" todayView attachment 761960

Look at all the Mopars!

That's where I got the bug, at the track. I was working on cars as a kid, then went to vo-tech auto mechanics, then dealerships and small garages. Learned that Mopars hardly ever came in the shop for anything major. So I've been a loyal supporter all this time.

I've had my "handle" since I was 16 on the CB radio.

Some great stories here guys. Thanks for sharing. I shared my stepdads story, now I'll share mine. When the show was still on, I loved seeing the Adam 12 police cars. I don't know, there was just something about them, besides them being Mopars. Maybe the car chases or the interiors. But, I wanted one ever since, sadly I still don't have one. Now that a few people are recreating them, I want one even more. Hopefully someday. IMO it's weird how they used Plymouths in the early seasons, but switched to an AMC in the later seasons. Either of these 3 will work for me

there have been so many really hard to pick just one

LAPD used Matadors is why they were used on the show.
MO Hwy Patrol bought Matadors one year. They were such big problems they were dumped after a year.

I too was captivated by the cars on Adam 12. I turned 16 in the fall of 1969 and my Dad had a '59 Plymouth station wagon I learned to drive in PLUS in the days when the high schools still had drivers ed ,our school had 2 brand new 69 Coronets we got to drive in that class. I was destined to be a Mopar person.

I'll go for the other easy kill here. Even though it wans't the "star" of the movie, nor does it receive as much recognition, the Charger from Bullitt sold me. The movie came out 20 years before I was born, but my dad had a VHS copy that was always wound to play just before the chase scene. I must have watched that single scene dozens of times growing up.

the Charger from Bullitt sold me.

Did not realize until just recently that the guy driving that Charger was actually with James Dean when he died from a car crash, arriving at the scene moments later. He was Deans friend and mechanic.

There was an F8 green 4 speed ram charger Super Bee that sat across the street from K-Mart from the time I was 12 to the time I was 18.

Never moved.

After I bought my 66 Coronet, when I was 16, I started driving there and knocking on the door.

I did it once a month for almost 2 years.

Once the owner answered. He was a guy about 5 years older than me.
He said he wasn't interested in selling it. We talked for a while and I gave him my number.
I said if he ever thought about selling it.......

About 2 weeks before my 18th birthday, there was a "for sale" sign on it, but no number.

Again, I started knocking on the door, religiously, daily, even sometimes multiple times and trying different times but never any answer.

About a month passed by and then it was gone.

About 2 years later, I did find and own a '70 for about 5 years, but I still want a '69.

That '69 ram air front end is the meanest looking thing I have ever seen.

BTW, seeing that 66 Coronet sitting there for sale, I immediately knew I wanted it, as well.

Those 2 cars turned me from a buick/olds/pontiac kid.

Plenty of cars that were "Not for Sale" that ended up being sold. I lost out on 3 that way...

I always was a motor head but the first car my dad had that impressed me was a new '58 Old Super 88 (exactly like the picture) .. now I know this is not a muscle car, but for a big car it could burn that tire up. I was 9 and my oldest brother was 17 and if we washed and waxed it, we could take it to get a hot dog about 4 miles away. He beat that thing to the hot dog stand and back. Fastest I ever went on a city street and it was great. I was hooked on speed and that was the start for me. Sixty year later, bad knees and all, I have a 4-speed stroker Dart. Guess it stuck.
