Needing advice on a swap. Ive found a 360 magnum engine with the trans it came with, would the engine and trans work or would i have to find an engine and a different trans for my 70 b body that came with a 318? Also if it will work how about engine wiring harness ect i would like to get everything i can if it can be used. Thanks in advance guys.

If it is from a truck, the oil pan and pickup tube are different for a car. And the 318 pan does not fit the 360.

Yes, I will be a bolt in except the drivers engine mount. Ether space it out with washers or get a 340/360 mount.

Which engine harness?
The F.I. I haven’t tried and is slightly over my head. I’m sure I can do it but never tried it. I’m just not 100% on everything that needs to be done.

For carb applications;

Your OE harness will work nearly perfect except for a few minor alterations. Starting with the Alternator, to the Magnum alternator will have to be modified. Just connect the two wires as you see fit I used spade connectors and just plugged it in.

The water temp wire MAY need to be lengthened. “MAY”
This depends also on what intake manifold you use and where the water temp sensor is placed. I had to relocate the water temp sensor on a Edelbrock RPM where I can laced it in the center of the front of the intake just behind the water neck.

Your driveshaft MAY need a new 727 home and be shortened since most 318’s were backed by a 904.
Take note of the Magnums trans to see if it has the proper mounting points for the old shifter. If not, Lokar (or similar cables) are an easy installation.

Exhaust manifold can exit at the wrong point and/or angle. Swapping manifolds should be easy enough but not a guarantee.

I used headers from Hooker. There 1-3/4 Super comps into a 2-1/2 pipe exhaust. The Hookers fit excellent!

For illustration purposes only.
This just happens to be a ‘79 Magnum.

Thanks guys. Will i still have to get a balancer where the engine and transmission has never been apart ? But for the most it seems to be a pretty basic swap. The engine and transmission is coming from a 2002 ram, i wasn't for sure if a newer trans would work or if i would have to get an older one were this one has overdrive in it. Im gonna go with a carburetor set up so ill prob just buy a new engine wiring harness for mine looks really ruff.

OD trans is longer and bigger
plan on some tunnel mods if using OD
also 96 and later od is electronic
do your homework or use 727 or 904 (with 360 balanced flexplate which it should have already

I have a 2002 magnum swapped complete with the EFI and OD trans in a 67 Belvedere. It's a fun swap but... the 02 trans needs the computer and serious work to the torsion bar cross member. Can post some pics if you want.
You will need a electric fuel pump too, even if you go carb.
The Magnum exhaust manifolds fit nicely in the B body.
My whole system is run with HotwireAutos "hotrod" magnum harness.

One thing more.
From 97, the a518/46re trans do not have a connection for manual speedometer cables. They are all electric speedos.
There are a couple workarounds for this tho.

Dang! I forgot about my electric fuel pump. FWIW, I used an Edelbrock electric fuel pump and also a separate purchase for there wiring hook up w/a relay. It was easy to instal and they have a carb pressure friendly rating. No fuel regulator needed.

Oh wyrm makes a good mention! Oh yea!

IF! You use an old 727 or 904, you’ll need to purchase the correct B&M flexplate to make it work. MAKE SURE it is for your Magnum engine! Not an older LA 360.

I used a 727 behind my ‘00-5.9.

Thanks for the info guys. I like the idea of putting a newer motor in my b body with a 904 or 727 but i also wonder if i should just wait and find a 440 with 727 from an rv or something , im guessing it should drop right in. I just dont want to get in a hurry just to put something in there when i could find something maybe better .

There’s always something better.
IMO, an RV 440 is junk from the factory and needs a rebuild ASAP, rand new and fresh or with a billion miles on it.

You got the 360 already. Have some fun with it. It’s better than an RV 440.

To save money and effort later IF you go big block, use the 727 behind the Magnum. No driveshaft issues later if and when the swap happens.

And I would try and keep the OD trans. Nothing like having 3.91 or 4.10 gears and still cruise the highway in OD. I was sold on that when I ordered a new 2000 Durango (4600 lbs) with a teen and 3.90 gears. I test drove many Durangos and that combo turned out to be what I liked. It had the power of the 360 with 3.55's but still beat it off the line and got the same or better mileage. That 70 B body would be fun with a 360 and OD.....and some gears behind it. Go for it!
