Hey, working on a Gen3 Hemi swap in my '64 Belvedere wagon. I wanted to keep the push button, so bought a "rebuilt" 1965 small block 727. We are getting close to firing the engine. Just had a slip yoke driveshaft made. Installed driveshaft, but cannot turn output shaft. Car is in neutral and no issues with the parking pawl. Any thoughts? You can turn the shaft about 1/8"-1/4", but feels like binding or problem.

Thanks for any advice!

sounds like it's in park anyway
but you say no problems
pull the housing
no side effects

I'm not well versed on the pre 66 727's but were there any major differences between the push button and 65 lever actuated cable shift units that would cause something like this?

Thanks, I will check the rear band. Hopefully it is something simple or it will be going to A&A for rebuild.

Something to consider is the 60-64 and 65 cable shift units are adjusted differently. The 60-64 is adjusted while an assistant is holding the button in reverse. The 65 units get adjusted with the button held in "low".

I'd call Rick and A&A an ask a few questions, a gen 3 hemi requires a different converter and shim plate, on the output side , that trans has a rear oil pump which could be binding if not set up properly, front to rear end play also. did the rear flange turn before installing the trans?

Agree with silver sedan. The crank flange to trans mount distance is different on a gen three than the early small block. It requires some special adapter parts. If you havent got em, could be your trouble.

The pawl assy may be installed so the pawl is being forced into the teeth of the park gear. Remove the park cable adapter housing. You can pivot the pawl with the housing removed. The cable pushes the lever towards the passenger side in park. Also watch there is an expanded area on 65 output shaft just in front of the splines. A standard length 727 yoke is yo long and can bottom on the area. Most need to be shortened by about 3/8".

Sounds like park cable is not disengaging. if you loosen the bolt that holds park cable try to pull cable out if it comes out it wasn't in correctly.

Thanks for all the advice! We did not try to turn it before trans was installed, should have done that now! Input shaft did turn.
We are using a Gen3 hemi ATI flexplate for 727. Converter is a Dynamics Convertor. Engine turns over fine, so no binding there.
Going to try the stuff suggested here then call A&A if no luck.

Well, figured out it was just stuck from sitting. Took a little force but everything is turning fine now. It was rebuilt 2 years ago and had been sitting, so makes sense. Thanks for the tips and advice! If there are more issues, it is going to A&A! You get what you pay for and I have learned that too many times now.
