Hi, my name is Ron and I have a few Mopars and parts. My question to you folks out there is, how can you tell if a car came with the 426 wedge by looking at the vin? Iam looking at a 65 Plymouth that is being sold as a 426 wedge car. Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks, Ron

Second line of the fender tag will have an 80 under AB. The build sheet will also tell you, nothing in the vin indicates displacement in 1965.

So what does the 80 denote? Or is that on all wedge cars?

Every engine had a different code number. In 1965 a 426 street wedge was 80. Any 1965 car with a 426 wedge would have 80 under the AB on the fender tag.

Welcome from Missouri!!

80 is 426W
61 is 383-4bbl
60 is 383 2bbl
50 is 361
40 is 318
20 is 225 Leaning tower of Power.
10 is 170 Leaning tower of less power
30 is 273
31 is 273-4bbl

82 = Gold

Ron, welcome. How about we answer the original question?

you can not determine what engine came in a 65 Plymouth by the VIN. You have to look at things like a fender tag.

All you can tell by the vin is if it was v8 or 6 cyl

I believe you can. It's seems as if the /6 cars started with a number while the V8 Cars would start with a letter. It just doesn't tell you WHICH V8. Meaning a 65 Plymouth with V8 would be something to the effect: R451******

Thanks, I passed on the 65 because it could not be verified correctly but, I did purchase a 64 Fury. Does anyone know what engine code 43 is on the build sheet? I suspect it is a 361? Thanks for your help

On the 64, if it is a 361 the code under AB will be 04 If you have a "3" Under the "C" then it is a 4 speed car.

If your car was built at the Hamtramk plant( fourth digit in VIN is a 2), then the engine code will be under QR on the fender tag. If there is no engine code, then it is the standard engine for that model.

Thanks! This a Los Angeles built car and under Engine Displacement it has an 04. No AB anywhere so, I suspect it is one and the same.
