Disclaimer: Kind of like Seinfeld, this is a post about absolutely nothing....
It's Saturday, my wife and I's usual day of the week for the sojourn down to the
local grocery store - which this time of year, means another excuse to get the GTX
out.
I've been experiencing a little jittery-surgy sort of thing out of the car under constant
cruise conditions lately. Nothing major and I'm sure the raggedy old Carter AVS has
something to do with it, but I've always wondered about the "new" electronic
distributor on the 440, too.
So...as the wife decides to head for the shower, I announce I'm gonna swap out the
distributor on the GTX "real quick".
She gives me that look, the one that implies she remembers all the previous times I
said similar things (that led to hours of cussing and throwing of tools usually).
"No, honest baby, won't take me 5 minutes" I say, defensively.
She rolls her eyes and heads off to the shower and I spring to action.
well ok, admittedly I don't "spring" too well anymore, so maybe "quickly walk" is more
apt a description of my gait to the garage, but I digress...
Lights and radio in the garage ON, hood up, grab the 1/2" ratcheting box wrench,
dig out the other electronic distributor I got from who knows where (but "looks new"),
and have at it.
3.2 minutes later, the "new" distributor is in and I'm hooking up the timing light on
the now-idling car.
While I'm at it, the usual other maintenance items are checked and topped off and
I even get out the vacuum gauge and check the carb idle mixture (it ain't changed).
Run her some, sounds fine, the thing still likes 14BTDC initial setting for some reason,
shut it all down and am back sitting in my chair when she comes out of the shower.
(She's been in the shower and hasn't heard a thing.)
She smirks at me and says "I guess you decided to hold off on that little project, eh?"
I just give her one of these:
I love these old cars, I really do.
