Am i crazy (Driving 69 Satellite from Kentucky to Oregon)?

Give me the dumb *** of the day award. Stopped for coffee and decided to check the fluids while I was stopped. Ps fluid was a little low so added some. Then I got sidetracked and forgot to put the cap back on. Drove down the interstate 20 miles before I remembered the cap! Stopped to check and sure enough I’d forgot it. I looked around in the engine bay hoping to get lucky but no luck. Taped it up with duct tape and decided to drive back for the cap. Got back to the parking lot and no cap to be seen. I figured it must have blown out down the road somewhere. Just when I was about to shut the hood this is what I saw. If you look closely it’s sitting on top the battery! Was there the whole time. It was wedged between the battery and hood insulation so it didn’t fall out. Wish I would have seen it 20 miles down the interstate! Haha... Oh well, at least I have the cap.

I figured it would be the gas cap that I’d lose first!

Having a little sputtering issue. Still runs but seems to jerk a little especially when getting up to speed. Decided it would be a good time to change fuel filters again. Maybe that’ll solve the issue.

Reminds me of the trip I did in a 70 Dart swinger 340 from San Diego to Maine in 95. Will never forget that adventure. Nor will you!

Getting close to home and the trouble starts.

Had to change a tire and wouldn’t you know it, the little lug nut cover screw was stripped. I was lucky there was a commercial tire nearby and they drilled it out for free. Thank you Commercial Tire!

New wheel looks better anyways.

Still having issues when taking off from a stop. Also stalled a couple times coming to a stop even in neutral. Something in the carb maybe? I’m gonna try and limp home because it still runs ok once I’m up to speed. About 250 miles to go. I’m a couple hours behind schedule.

Likely a chunk of junk in the fuel line or carb somewhere I would guess. Wow, that wheel really looks good on there. You might check point gap too. You're close anyway.

Call it a day man, no need to rush specially so close to home, find a nice motel, take a hot bath, have a nice and hearty meal, tomorrow, early in the morning, clean the the carb thoroughly, and enjoy pleasantly the last miles to home, you are not a young man to hurry things up, quite the ride you have!

Did the fuel filter look like this?

My 67 Dart had gas that looked like THIS:

Lucky for me, the filter caught it. I took off the front float bowl and it was clean in there.
Low speed stumbles could be a failing accelerator pump. Are there any vacuum leaks?

This experience - and this car - will be with you the rest of your life, Sam.
It's truly wonderful to follow along - so many of us have had these kinds of experiences in our
own times, so we're living vicariously through you now.
See it through. Be careful!

Thanks guys! I’ll reply to you guys later. I think I can make it home tonight if no more unexpected issues pop up. Still idling like crap when coming to a stop or taking off. It’s ok though when I get up to speed.

I made it to Oregon though as you can tell from the pic. And no I didn’t buy but I probably broke the law by the looks of those signs!

sounds like the idle circuit is full of crap, just keep moving and it may work out of it.

I am sure he will fix that carb and head back to see all the other things he missed!Lol

Oh yeah, when I changed the worn tire, the second I tried to drive Off I heard clunk clunk clunk. Wheel weights were hitting the upper control arm or ball joint. Not sure which. The tire guys were nice enough to pull them off for me.
