As an architect who values his time in the field working with contractors as there are no problems, only solutions, I take offense at that generalization. As with ALL people, there are good and bad within every type. I have worked for several of the prima donnas and have made it a point of my practice to treat everyone I interact with the same. From the snobby client to the man digging the footing, all are the same to me.
I take-back that statement of mine in your case. You obviously are one of the 'few'.

I seem to run into the 'many' out there. The ones that really get my blood boiling are the Post-Grad students out on the first fieldtrips with a clipboard, a pencil and a load of freshly minted thought processes. Ask them something difficult like "Ok, where do you want us to start digging?", and they run like the dinner gong just rang.
I worked on our Sky Tower about 20 years ago fitting pedestrian control gates at the base of the lifts. The architect in charge was fresh out of Pencil-sharpening College, and it was his first outing with the keys to the site. He got absolutely hammered with questions about crappy decisions and design features that were (and did) doomed to fail. A light-weight aluminium C-channel ceiling system that was also curved to represent the waves of the ocean..... the poor guy installing knew it was a cock-up before he started.....but he persevered. You only had to breathe hard and the channels came tumbling down. He must have placed each piece at least three times. It was one of those semi-see-through ceilings that adorned small office buildings - usually in the entry.....not designed for spanning over 25 metres and in a curved form. It was outdated in the 1980's...... and here we were in 2002'ish putting that up again.

BTW....this youngster only got the design job because Daddy owned the business that had the contract.
