How many gallons in a 1/4 tank of gas?

If the fuel gauge was linear it is easy to calculate but it's not.
I have a '64 Polara500. I drained the gas tank completely. The fuel gauge
sender was factory and still worked. Empty read all the way down. 5 gal.
read exactly on 1/4. They are not linear! From1/4 it goes down FAST.
I would siphon it dry and 1 gal at a time for at least 5 gal.

There are 7.48 pounds / gallon of fuel. Measure the thank's weight (net weight) divide by 7.48 pounds/ gallon = number of gallons.......just a thought.......

Looked it up on Google and several sources estimated that a gallon of unleaded 87 octane gasoline weighs an average of 6.1 lbs. Several factors can increase or decrease its weight slightly.

Thanks for verifying what I said.

I installed a brand new tank in my 71 Plymouth B body Satellite with a new sending unit. I put four gallons into the tank before the gauge even started to move. There must be three gallons underneath empty in these tanks.
After watching the Seinfeld episode where Kramer intentionally runs the car out of gas, I found out that american car makers generally put about sixty miles worth of fuel after the gauge reads empty! European and other models, when it says empty, you're out of gas!!!

The "E" on a fuel gauge indicates "Enough"

I don't like cranking my old cars for a couple min to get gas to the carb but you could run your car until it runs out to see if, or how far the gauge is from empty when it runs out. Put a gallon can (or so) in the trunk to get you back to the station . Save a little to trickle down the carb to get it started again.

Sure it's nice to have an accurate gauge. You won't find much accuracy with a new aftermarket sender. A Meter Match will get you closer. Heck, even the factory senders weren't perfect.

Really, who cares as long as you know where empty is at. Both of mine are fairly accurate but when the gauges get down to 1/4 it's time to find a gas pump.

60 miles at 10-12 might is about 6 gallons, depending on the tank capacity.

How big is your tank? Is it stock?

In case I forgot to mention it, I have been driving to burn the gas low enough to set the fuel level for E, 1/4 and 1/2. I already set it for Full.

Sorry Bob but we aren't getting into the molecular structure and atomic weight of gasoline. :BangHead: :BangHead:
You are correct.......after all, what are we trying to replicate.......sounds like the old Mobilgas economy run where fuel measurement of fuel is by the ounce....or in the general category of: does it REALLY MATTER????.......Fill up whenever you want.......just my opinion....
