A833 4 speed second gear trouble

Reverse is never quite as sure as the forward gears since it lacks synchronization. But if by sticky you mean getting all the way over into the gate - yes, some more fine tuning on the shifter adjustment and rods will probably help.
Or a wobbly first gear.
Reverse is activated by a movable gear meshing simultaneously with the cluster and first gear to reverse the direction of the mainshaft. If the bushing in first gear is worn, the gear will wobble and make shifting into reverse a bit tough.
Also, if the cluster gear thrust washers are worn or missing, the sliding gear won't correctly mesh with the cluster (and first gear).

If/when you have a chance to remove the reverse shift rod from the lever on the transmission, verify that reverse moves smoothly in and out of gear. If the side cover and/or either the 1-2 shift shaft or reverse shaft have been switched out, it is possible the reverse interlock is binding with the 1-2 shift shaft. The factory actually stamped the 1-2 shift shafts with either an A or B designating the depth of the machined groove in the 1-2 shaft. Hope this helps…

I always had good luck by putting the trans in 1st or 2nd, then go to reverse. It helps stop the gears from rotating inside momentarily.

Without the rod attached it goes in and out of reverse perfectly. But once the shifting rod is attached, that is when there is a bit of binding and trouble going into gear. I will check the rods but the revers rod is very distinctive from the others on this set up

If you can put up some pictures it should be an easy fix.

Here are a couple of photos I snapped

The reverse shift rod is installed backwards.

Remove the reverse shift rod from both ends and reinstall it so you can not see the shift rod retaining clips.

The adjustable end of the shift rod needs to be attached to the reverse shift lever on the transmission.

The adjustable end of 1-2 shift rod should be reinstalled so you can see the retaining clip.

The other end of 1-2 shift rod just remove the shift lever nut and flip the shift lever over and reinstall it.

That configuration did not work the adjustable end hits the reverse lever
