I have everything set up and check the concetricity of the front pump bore to crank centerline. Starting at the 12 o'clock position the needle swings to .009 then as it comes around it goes .015 in the opposite direction. It seems to me that the total runout would be .006. But after reading the monroe book. Im questioning whether it would be .006 or .024.

Is the .006 correct?

In your case zero is not at the 12:00 position. Set it to zero at either the 15 thou or the 9 thou position, and your TIR will be .024".
 
Ugh! Thats what I was afraid of. But that would probably explain some unusual wear i see on the torque converter.
 
If the indicator shows +.015" in one direction and -.009" in the other. that is .024" total runout.

Ok. Thanks! The link 493Mike posted has a .021 offset dowel set. Am I correct in thinking that installed correctly this would bring my tir to .003?
 
Here's pics of the torque converter wear and the front pump bushing. The trans is a 50k mile unit out of a motorhome. The torque converter is a 9.5 in FTI unit.

How long was that converter used in the current setup?? I dont really see wear on the converter hub, but a measurement of the oil pump bushing may tell a different story.
On one that i had problems with, the obvious issue was visible on the snout, not so much the hub.
 
The trans was original from 1977 50k miles. It also sat dry for 12+ years. When I put the car together I put a tf2 shift kit and a converter in it. I had a cam go bad so I decided I would rebuild the trans while it was apart. It always seemed to have very soft shifts. I found a couple of seals that were in less than stellar shape. But other than that it was in very good shape inside.

TF 2 kits normally provide solid shifts. If the frictions and kick down band were in good shape? Then the seals and rings couldn't have been terrible. Which seals were suspect? The governor and stator support rings generally show the greatet wear. If the throttle pressure linkage was correct? Revist the TF 2 kit and go more aggressive with the mods.

The front clutch piston seals and the low reverse servo piston seals were rounded down on the sealing edge. The front clutch frictions look like they have been hot and there is hot spots on the steels. The rear clutch frictions look good but it doesnt seem like they were making full contact with the steels.
