1971 satellite wagon value??

Hello, I'm new to fbbo. Anyways getting to my question. How much is a 71 satellite wagon worth? Its in fairly good shape with minor surface rust in a few places, really no true cancer. It has a good running 318 4v and dual exhaust. I'm thinking about trading my truck for it but I honestly don't know the value of it. So if I end up selling it what is a good starting price for it? I possibly will have it painted if I get it. I will post some pics up of it asap so you can see it. Thanks!

Welcome to the site. Valuing station wagons is a tricky business because there is virtually no market for them, especially ones with smaller engines. That's the bad news. The good news is there are some people who love wagons and will buy them, but they are very few and far between, which means once you add in the cost of shipping the car to where they are at, the shipping may be more than what the car is worth to them.

That looks to be a pretty well beaten down, low-optioned, car, so I would value it at about $1,000 to $1,500.
 
I disagree on the market.

There is more market for wagons than 4 doors, and some body style wagons are worth as much or more than 2 doors.

Today's "SUV" generation is starting to see wagons and SUVs as what they truly are- the same thing.

Tint the windows, put on some nice wheels, hang a surf board out the back...instant market.

That being said, I agree on value. I wouldn't go too much over about 2K and that's if it runs and drives.

I paid $850 for my running, virtually rust free (except floorboards) original paint 67 9 pass wagon with a/c.

Are those bucket seats I see?

LOL And what is the market for four-doors these days? And when have you seen a Satellite station wagon selling for more than a Satellite coupe? I know I haven't seen that. :)

I think you hit the head when you stated the price for your wagon. That's about what these are selling for. I've seen several listed in the $2,500-$5,000 range, but they are listed forever and then disappear after months and months, I'm guessing because someone offered the seller $500 or a grand and the car sold.

And not to get too far in the weeds, there's always the issue with parts for these cars. No one is repopping the station wagon-unique stuff, so you've got to buy OEM, and that's provided you can find what you need.
 
I paid $400 for mine. But, it looks like mine was in rougher shape, AND mine is a 73. I'd imagine the 71-72 goes for more.
 
Ok I'm glad for yalls input. I'm probably not going to get it. It might be cool for a bit but I know that will wear off quickly for me and I would want to sell it. I just wanted some ideas on the value so I didn't go in the hole on it. Thanks for your help. I think I will hold off on it.
 
I love Wagons.... if I were looking for one like that I'd gladly pay $3,000 maybe more? I look at it like this, if you want a wagon then getting a super solid one is priceless because it isn't like parts are as readily available although I'm sure some parts will interchange. Starting out solid is worth a lot in my book.

And you're a perfect example of the market. :) Guys who will pay top dollar are few and far between, have to be looking for a car, and have to be willing to pay for shipping most of the time.

I'm in the same boat as I've been looking for a 68 or 71 Satellite sedan for several months now, and every time I find one it's on the other side of the country and would cost more to ship than the car costs.
 
I bought a 72 wagon several years ago that didn't have an engine or transmission for $400 and it was super solid. I bought it for a demolition derby car. I know some people that would give $1000 for the shell to use as a derby car. I have junked a lot of nice 2 doors and wagons over the years using them as derby cars, some I wish I could go back and not use them for that.
 
I really love wagons. I have a 73 town and country that I love driving as much as my roadrunner.... For very different reasons.

Depending on options (towing package, a/c, sport package), I would pay up to $3000 for a good running wagon like the one you are looking at that appears to be a low option car that I would use as a base to build a sport wagon....

If it has and rust... I would walk away.... Look into the cowl and at the pillar ends of the cowl.... They can go bad at the cowl/firewall and be a real pain to fix.

Finally I would go to a wagon forum and keep an eye out for a good one... Always cheaper to buy one than build one.
