I know there are a bunch of threads on decoding engine numbers, but i cant find one that helps me here

Looking to figure out what year this 440 is (i think a crate 440?) since it is not original to my Coronet
my '66 Coronet originally had a 383 in it, but someone pulled it and put a 440 from i dont know what

from the pictures attached, i gathered the below, but im not sure what it means - was my 440 built in 1973?

looking to make sure i get the correct oil filter, spark plugs, wires, etc for the car.

7 – 19 – 73
3698830-440-7
D N

any help is appreciated, thanks!

D arrow pointing to it indicates Day shift casting
3698830 – 1972-1978, 440 RB-series big-block
7 – 19 – 73 Seventh month 19th day of 1973. The numbers you want to post are found on the flat pad up by the water neck.

Got it, I knew I was missing something. All it says is :

J 440
7 27

Believe J is for 1974 and 440
Built on 7th month and 27th day? Pretty sure that is correct.

So block casted on the 19th and built on the 27th of the same month. Pretty cool

The "J" is 1973. ("I" was skipped from usage)
Build date July 27th.

There may be additional info stamped on the driver's side pan-rail outcropping below the starter. Gotta crawl under for that....

J 440
7 27
"J" =1973 model year
440 = 440 ci (Non HP)
7 27 = Assembly date = 27 July 1973

you guys beat me to the punch
singe finger typing

is this enough info to figure out what model this may have come out of? A RB series 440 from 1973, or do I need more info to know what oil, filter, plugs, wires, etc I should be using?

Sorry was off by a year. lol
G = 1970
H =1971
I =1972
j= 1973

The numbers off the pad above the oil pan would be more likely to help figuring what it came out of. Just remember after the early 70's these engines became low compression smog engines.. I wouldn't look too far into it you might be depressed to find out it came out of a dump truck. Just build it like its a new engine. DON'T LOOK BACK..

Oil 10-30, 15-40, 20- 50, you pick. Get some with zinc.
Plugs NGK XR5
Wires pretty wide open, 67 coronet RT 440 could be said
Filter Fram PH8A, WIX 51515, ETC

10,000 day calendrer began 26 Jul 1961 = "S"
63 = T
64 = V
65 = A
66 = B
67 = C
68 = D
69 = E
70 = F
71 = G
72 = H
73 = J
beginning in '74 = "4T"
75 = 5T

Sure would like to see the fender tag or at least get the VIN and some good pics of your "G" code 66 440.

Is G code a good thing?

VIN of- WH23G6 means it's a factory 383 car.

*note there is an error in the 1966 factory service manual engine VIN digit decoding.

* also note that all 383 engines in 1966 B body cars were four barrel carburetor engines.
