I have a 68 Road Runner. The frame is not the greatest so I thought I would remove most of the parts and sell the rest with a good title. I have been learning lots. But when I checked the vin vs. fender tag I got worried. It appeared to not be correct. The fender tag matched the rest of the cars numbers stamped(where I could find them) - but the vin and title were different. I got to investigating - stopped when I found the answer I thought served my purpose. Now thinking I should get more clarity.
here is what I found:
I was worried about the last 6 on fender tag not matching just like this guy said in another post elsewhere......
**The VIN numbers and the Fender Tag SHOULD match in the last 6 digits...........somethin fishy here.**
then i saw a post after that ....
*very knowledgeable guy replied*That only applies to 69 and newer cars
68 and older cars have the shipping order number stamped on the fender tag(not the VIN) and it is the shipping order number that is stamped into the body as the hidden number.
unique to 68

Is this true? If so... how can you tell if the dash with vin have been replaced from a different car?

68 is the shipping order number on the tag
69 and later is the VIN.
That confirms what the other very knowledgeable guy said, thanks.... but then how could a person know if that car had a different vin with title to it? ... nothing on the car "body" says vin and title info

You need a broadcast sheet, or other factory paperwork to tie the two numbers together. The body numbers tie the body to the fender tag, so you can tell what model your car is, and what engine it had etc.

On mine, number on block and transmission matched the VIN. There is also number somewhere on radiator support that matches either the tag or the VIN. It's been a while since I looked.

Examples of where the body numbers are located. 1st and 2nd pic are trunk. 3rd is the radiator support. Both should match each other and the vin tag.
