71 Charger SE build

After loading up the 440 for the 74 to send off to the machine shop I started on the lower windshield trim. Had lots of scuffs and scratches. Got it sanded out to 1500 so far. Fingers are raw. Before and after.

I swear, 90% of restoration is cleaning and refinishing; punctuated by the rare moment when a part is bolted on to stay. If you want to see a grown man cry, come see whenever it's time to put a part back on. It gets me every time.

Vacation day today do I was able to finish sanding and polishing the lower trim. My new M12 buffer was perfect for this job. Also cleaned up the wipers with 0000 steel wool and Evaporust and put on new Anco stainless blades. Pretty much the only thing under the hood is the washers.

Seat time. Lots of work, tearing them down, cleaning, blasting, and the covers soon. Also drove around...

Hmm . . . I didn't have that foam block over the tunnel. I shoved a bunch of extra foam under the seat though for more support. I didn't replace the springs. The front bench is still super comfy with the original foam and springs.

Back seat is done. Almost as big a pain as the side glass. I added 1/2" of high density foam and new burlap on them so tight, tight, tight. Did the final covering out in the sun so they were plenty warm so I could stretch the crap out of them.

The seat covers were much harder to install than I thought they'd be. I didn't even try with my front bench. Luckily it's still comfy after 50 years!

I love that '71 cloth material! Just don't see that in every 3rd car.

It is actually 73 material. I bought the covers in 2017 for another car I had and it got sold before I could use them. I think they will suit the car just fine. Plus covers these days are 30 plus weeks out and $2500 for a cloth set.

It took ten plus months to get the 71 Charger seat covers I ordered last year. I opened the boxes up on Sunday, it was like Christmas morning! Lol

The white set of seat covers are for my 71 Charger R/T which is going to be EV2 Hemi Orange with a white vynal top and interior. The black set are for the Citron Yellow 71 Charger.

Wife has band practice tonight so I was able to start on the drivers bucket seat. Frames are nice just dirty. I will give them a light blasting and repaint. Foam is in great shape.

I've since replaced it with the proper 71 hounds tooth cover.

I don't remember if I kept the 73 cover.
I used the same frame and foam for the 71 cover.

I really wanted the Orange 71 covers but cost, lead time, and since I already had these I went with them. In the future I might still do it and put these seats in my 74.

I have those black and orange seat covers in my Charger convertible. I love them. The good thing about having more than one Mopar is that you can always move parts around from car to car. I thought I had a better picture of the seats, but you can see the corner of them in the picture of the shifter.

I am thinking Orange Houndstooth cloth like I had in my 71 Bee.

I had a set of those in my 71 Road Runner a while back. They were nice looking and comfortable.

Vacation day! Got the frames blasted and painted along with the reinforcement rods. Had a broken spring mount on the drivers bottom outer spring so I welded it in place. Should have the covers on this one tomorrow.

Drivers seat is done. Adding the 1/2" foam made a big difference on how they came out. A lot harder to get them on but worth it.
