71 road runner on Barrett-Jackson

the Plumb Crazy/In Violet 71 RR ?? it was a decent quality driver custom/modified type home build... with 2 active bidders, that helps allot, to drive the bidding price up... Also there was a very nice quality yellow/with black bumble bee stripe 70 Charger R/T 440 6 Pack car, that sold for what I thought was "really cheap" or "very well bought" {I think $48K ??}, for the quality of the build & car/options... it all depends on the crowd & whether you have at least 2 active/stimulated bidders interested... it can go both ways, it's a captive group of willing buyers too...

Thats a butt load of money for that car. All that aftermarket racey stuff.

A/G bubble and door fit like crap. Hood is not lined up. Wrong shifter. Looks like a nice enough of a car from here but not 53K nice.

I'll definitely agree on that one. 53K for a half cobbed '71. Spend all that time and money just to leave a rat nest wiring job under the hood. So what else was half-assed on the car?

That car would snatch 20K-25K tops around here.

but not 53K nice.

Resto-Mods & Pro-Touring, is where the market is going lately, more than just the overpriced 100% OEM restoration of just a few years ago... all that aftermarket racey/performance stuff is selling cars... be it right or wrong.. my $0.02 cent on what I have been seeing at these auctions...

barret jackson is load of crap...it's akin to going to walmart to buy a tv for $2000, that you can buy any other place in town for $500...

Oh I agree with ya Bud but that is not a restro-mod or a pro-tour. Its just a 383 RR with a bunch of racey crap on it. I've built a few resto-mods for a BJ guy here. When done right they can bring big bucks. 240K for a 69 Camaro a few years back. 180k for a 71 Hemi Cuda mod. The last one I just did is a 69 Camaro mod which is at he RS auction with a 100K reverse. I've also seen some really nice cars not bring crap and some piece of crap cars bring really nice money.
For alot of the buyers it is about feeding their egoes.

all the people that haven't actually been to an, actual "Barrett Jackson Auction" in person, not just watching on the boob tube, should really go sometime, it's far more than just an overpriced classic car auction, it's a true gathering of car/automotive industry people & automotive products, kind of a traveling SEMA show or much like a great car show, with great food too, with many other collector car related fringe benefits... you don't ever even have to step foot in the auction tent & can have a great time, just walking around...

Also agree. I delivered a couple cars for the auction a few years back. I hob nobbed round with all the money boys for a couple days. Is a cool event for a car guy to see. Tons of really cool cars. That year there was one 71RR. Real plain jane black 383 bench seat column shift. Nothing to get excited about. Went for 32K.

By auction standards, that actually wasn't a good price. High range on a 71 bird at auction is currently around $92,000 (which a few years ago was the average price point). The mid point is about $36,000, so this was bought for a bit better than average price.

I was interested to see how well that Charger with the new Hemi was going to sell. Sure was flat. I think it would have sold for more had it been restored to original.

I have two first gen Chargers, a 66 and 67. My wife and I went on Sunday and looked at a fair 67 Charger that had some major issues, including it being a Turbine Bronze car with a flat black motor compartment! It fetched 24,200, which is at least 10K more than it was worth. Amazing what folks are paying for these Mopars out there. We are going back tomorrow to attend some of the auctions...

That yellow 70 charger r/t only sold for $35,000. They had to restart the bidding twice on it.

was that the 70 Charger R/T car with the 440 Six pack w/big 440 decals on the hood ??.... I remember them restarting it, back at $10k one time, after it went to $46K the 1st time {I told my Pops at the time," I'd be pissed if I was the consigner/owner"} & but I thought it got back to $46-$48K on the second round of bids, I don't remember a 3rd time...LOL... but my memory or attention span more like...LOL..., isn't really the best... I don't remember the yellow 68 Charger w/Gen 3 Hemi engine/pro-touring style car's selling price... I remember thinking "the guy had more money than that, in it" thou...

i've been wanting to go for a few years and i saw quite a few really nice original looking cars go for much less than it would have cost to buy and restore them back in the 2008-9 time frame but haven't watched last few years.

Yes, that was the one. They restarted the bid cause somebody thought the car was blowing blue smoke and one of the floor people were waving their arms around trying to get the smoke away from his face and the auctioneer thought he was getting a higher bid until they got that snafu corrected. The auctioneer then explained to the bidders that it was not the charger that was smoking but the car next in line (early 50's street rod). I didn't see what the pro-touring charger when for either. They had a 70 Super Bee sell for $50,000 tonight I think. Another Mopar went for $80,000 but can't remember what that was.

.

92K for a 71 RR? Maybe a #'s 6-pack 4-spd car. Couple years ago a 71 Hemi RR sold for around 150K and that was the highest of any Hemi B-body that year.

it only takes 2 people bidding, to drive the price thru the roof...LOL... the auction thing is a total crap shoot, you may get all the money plus some or may lose your butt too, especially with a no reserve car, allot of the cars that have reserves don't seem to sell... but you don't know if you don't try I guess... they get their 10% consignment/sellers fees & 8% buyers fees regardless... It's a good racket if you can do it, BJ is getting 18%+ on every car over the block, every few minutes, but they have a ton of overhead too, probably a marketing & logistics/demographics nightmare also, with all the venders & registration/taxes or finacial issues... I'm sure they're making big money, either way... Their smart & have a great niche', I don't hold that against them, at all...

I guess the 71 bird had some magic going on, because as said here previously, the 6-pack yellow Charger & orange Super Bee only brought 40-50k... I was somewhat surprised at that. And only 70k for a Hemi GTX ??? Yet, people were slobbering over themselves to puff up the Generic Motors stuff ?

Same Car ??

See what happens when you drink before bidding. I'm sure they pump in oxygen like vegas to keep you going as well..LOL
