Hey guys,

So I rebuilt my four speed last April when I rebuilt my engine. 71 Charger, 440/4speed, 3.55 8 3/4 rear.

Well, unfortunately this bad boy is leaking 90w like a sieve! Well, maybe that's an exaggeration but there is a puddle of oil in my driveway and the trans is covered with droplets of 90w.

Upon inspection, she appears to be leaking from the yoke output seal, the rearmost shift lever shaft, and possibly the reverse shaft as well (although it might just be covered in oil from the leaky shaft above it.) The front shift shaft is dry. And it might be leaking a bit from the reverse light switch.

Now, I believe I changed out all the o-rings and stuff when I rebuilt this baby. But what I'm wondering is: can I replace the shift-shaft seal with the trans still in the car? Well, I know I CAN. Cause all that needs to come off is the side-cover. But, will it be next to impossible to get the side cover back on with the tranny still attached to the motor?

Also, this thing pops out of second gear when decelerating. If you're engine breaking down a hill, gauranteed it'll pop out of gear. Any notion on that?

Thanks!
Sam

If you are working on a lift you could do it. Probably a pita though. Kicking out of gear may be a linkage adjustment issue. Or lets hope so. Otherwise you can wait to pull the side cover once its on the bench.

Yeah I know, maybe I should just pull this thing out....

Can I do it on jackstands, with a big floor jack?

Did all o rings and seals get lubricated during assembly? If not the new seals can be damaged during assembly or before lubricant can get to the seals.

If you can afford to rebuild enough time it will eventually get done right.
Try adjusting the shifter linkage on 1-2 make sure stops are not keeping it from going all the way into 2nd if so equipped.
The cover plate should come out but the rear of the transmission may have to be lowered. Make sure to catch the grease that will come out on the cover plate removal.

1) Did you replace the tail shaft bushing? How does the yoke feel in the trans?

2) You can R&R the side cover from the bottom however it is a little tricky to get the shift forks back in place and get the cover on. I usually put heavy grease on the 3-4 shift fork post so it stays steady and then use a screwdriver or other thin, flat tool to guide the 1-2 shift lever into the side cover. You must do it this way because the design of the 1-2 shift fork prevents loading it while inserted into the side cover.

3) I'd spray everything down with solvent and run it on jack stands to reevaluate the leak points prior to taking anything apart. If you have to replace the tail shaft bushing unfortunately the transmission needs to be removed. I would also inspect for any leakage coming from between the transmission-bellhousing mating area. If the countershaft leaks at the front of the case oil tends to go everywhere.

Am I wrong in thinks to counter shaft loads from the back of the case and is a pressed fit at the front with no gasket or seal!

Yes, but they can still leak at the front. That is why I use acetone at that point and then some rtv smeared on that area.

I think I did replace the bushing.... Pretty sure at least. I used a Brewer's rebuilt kit which I just checked, and yes it comes with a new bushing, so I assume I must have installed it. Maybe I'll put a new output seal in and cross my fingers. I already drained the oil and pulled the propshaft.
Also, this thing will pop out of reverse too....

Yes, but watch your fingers that 833 weighs about as much as 2 muncies. :toothy5:
If your working on the floor by yourself you would be better off with a adjustable tranny jack.

Whatis meant by rebuilt? Synchros and bearing?

Yeah, that's what I meant. All new synchros, seals, and bearings.
