on a 1974 a904 rear clutch with 4 friction and 3 steels what is the ideal clearance. right now i can fit .020 comfortably and .035 if i really get it in there but it's pretty tight. i also have a .060 snap ring in it currently. is this too tight and if so what can i do to give it more room? i cant find snap rings smaller than .060

Front clutch:
4 Disc 0.067" to 0.134"
5 Disc 0.072" to 0.152"

Rear Clutch:
4 Disc 0.032" to 0.055"

You have the thinnest snap ring they make and I would run with the clearance you have. I have seen many recommendations for the 727 rear as tight as .015".

When I rebuild transmissions, I like to see .025" - .035" clearance for rear clutch pack. For the front pack, I aim for . 020" clearance per clutch disc. So, . 080" clearance for 4 clutch, . 100" for 5 clutch. So, I would say you are OK where you are, likely around .030" for your rear pack.

Your fine. The only time the rear clutch would drag is in reverse.
