Any closet chevy guys ? Rare motor???

Is it possible that the car was a 67 and not a 68?
I suppose it IS possible, it was a long time ago. But even then, i knew the 67s werent marked and i thought the 68s WERE. That was why i was surprised that there was no marking anywhere as to engine size, or that it was a z.
I was into hot rod chevies at the time, i had a 57 with a 350 lt1 crate in it, with the rochester fuel injection. When my friend brought it to me , he told me he had bought a 275hp 327, from a local new chevy dealer. I started looking at it. Instead of an iron intake and a carter, and a snorkle air cleaner, it had an aluminum intake, an open element, and a holley. Clue 1,2,and 3. It had a solid lifter tick, and a 750 or so idle, not 500 and a juice cam. Clue 4, and 5. It had a 6500 (or so, i dont remember exactly) redline on the tach, a twelve bolt rear, multi leaf springs, and a factory traction bar, none of which belong on a 327 car, clue 6,7,8, and 9. It had the typical stripe package of the 67/68 z cars.
YET, it had no badge on the fender, hood, grille, or even a 302 sticker on the air cleaner.
I agree, it is entirely possible that a previous owner had taken off the fender designation, tho i saw no sign that had been done, to make it more of a sleeper, but then why was it traded in as an ordinary camaro?

............

I put a 302 in my 64 Corvette back in the 70s.
That was a high reviving engine, loved it.
They were originally built for the TransAm
series when you had to to run an under 305
Cu,Inch .
302s had 295 advertised HP,but I would say
that was definitely short.

in 67 the z28 nomenclature wasn't a car or model 'yet',
it was an option package of specific parts
really until mid-late ? 1968 it wasn't the car name at all
it was just an options package, specific to the Camaro

I've had all three years 67-68 & on the 69 had the z28 badges
a dozen of them in all 3 years, mostly 67 & 68's
I knew people that had 68's with the z28 badging
but not 100% sure it was factory badge,
I think they added it
I know for a fact the z28 option in 67 wasn't badging
I never saw a factory 302 call out for 67 either

if it had hideaway light it was an RS package
if it just had striping it was a SS package
the RS package stickers or badges,
always trumped the SS package if it had both options
even on the 67 & early 68's, as far as I knew in Calif. anyway

maybe in different states
maybe it was different
I use to know that ****, like I know MoPars
kind of lost interest when I didn't find or buy any of them anymore
everybody & their mother all of a sudden had a z28
when they didn't really make that many of them
100's of thousands of them badged as z28's now
doesn't mean they are real, most aren't

I'll bet chevy sold more Z/28 badges, than the sold Z/28s.

my experience riding in a Dz car.

met a guy who had a 69dz motor in his el camino.
i was looking for parts for something? and he knew a seller locally.
so i went to his place,he shows me this 302,all decked out.
i was impressed initially,i hadnt even heard of the 302dz until then.
he starts this thing up,its loud, like Very loud,i think to my self.

then he goes to take off,and its Screaming, the car doesnt even take off till around 4 grand.
we are in a small neighborhood and its stop signs every block.
i was deaf by the time we got to the sellers place,
i didnt buy a thing and away we went back to his place.
i was never so glad to get out and away from a car as i was that el camino.
so yes it had plenty of power, but on the street it was all wrong.

i got into my amx and sighed with relief as i took off in 2cnd gear Quietly.

I see that but I also see a web site that seems to be well put together. Honestly it's hard to know who is right as any joe shmo can make a web page .
The motor looks to have been rebuilt .so ether way not a big deal I'll just get it in the kids car and run with it . I was just trying to see if it was a wanted /needed engine .
I know how mopar guys go nuts over org engine s

Suffix codes
Suffix codes are stamped into a small boss on the front passenger side of the block where the head and block meet. There will sometimes be two lines of numbers and letters, later engines had just one line of numbers and letters.

Small block Chevy engines used different size pads for the engine suffix/partial VIN. Mid '70s-up blocks use the short, fat pad (top example in the picture below). Early engines use the middle pad. Blocks from the '60s through the mid '70s use the bottom pad.

Beginning about 1969 the suffix code became (mostly) three characters instead of one or two.

Well by this information looks like the kid got a nice rebuilt motor
