found out my carb setting where a bit lean driving for about 2 days....how do i know if my cars been detonating/pinging or if any damage has been done to the engine?it ran a bit rough while taking off on first gear...first i just though the clucth plate/clutch was giving in....

notice the carb was lean when car got to about 190 temp...shut the car down readjusted the carb and it rins 160-180 degree all day

just want to make sure no damage was done.check the sparkplugs??

lunati 60303 cam edelbrock heads,.30 over 440 kb pistons 237..felpro gasket .40 ...headers i think in thinkness..always run 97 octane fuel..summit racing ignition module with mopar electronic distributor

One downfall of the KB pistons is cracking and coming apart after a bad detonation.I believe you have nothing to worry about since you have been running a good high octane fuel.I would personally check a plug(s) since it takes no time at all to pull one out and go from there.KB pistons are a really great value and pretty dependable, but that's the fastest way to destroy them, unlike a forged or even cast for that matter. If the car was pinging or acting up then you'd be able to recognize it pretty quickly because of the sound it would make.Pretty distinctive.

With 97 octane, I don't think you have any worries.
rusty is there a chance it could ping because the car was running lean??and cause damage??and i couldnt hear anything but had a slight vibration while taking off on 1st gear

I wouldn't think so...not with 97. I think I would be lookin maybe at drive line issues with the vibration. Maybe bad motor or trans mount.....something to change the pinion angle.

Plugs usually have a story to tell weather good or bad. Only takes a couple minutes to read that story.

Their octane rating and ours are two different animals. I think their 97 is more like our 87-91.. At least this is what I was told by someone in the middle east

Leakdown test/ compression test I guess... The ringlands can get munched when you detonate. If you dont have an issue there then my guess is you are fine.

That makes sense. Since nothing else is standardized, certainly octane rating wouldn't be either. Thanks.

Good point ss. Europe and most of that side of the world is typically rated in RON (research) unlike the US with the average of research and motor (R+M/2). For example my 70 bug required 91 RON, which is about 86 or 87 here.

A lean engine will definitely ping so it's possible you have an issue in that area. But when you say you make an adjustment I assume you mean the idle mixture screws? This might help during tip in but is no way going to do anything for you at WOT. You may need to change jets. With KB237's and the Eddy heads you likely don't have 10:1 CR so should get by with a 91 R+M/2 equivalent.

Looking at plugs should give some clue if your gas is not like the swill we have in CA. Just curious, what do you have for fuel? Straight gas or some ethanol blend.

asked a few guys here and 97octane here =93 octane in the us...going to take the plugs out and have a look tonight...and i think its just straight gas.

93 is pretty good still...LOL

reading the plugs wont tell you if you damaged the ringlands/pistons, it will give you an idea of how its running though and if you are lean.

A simple compression test will let you know if you did damage. I would use an afr (Air fuel ratio) gauge and dial it correctly.

Oh lord. I just went back and saw the edelbrock head thing. Stop worryin about detonation. It didn't happen. lol

If you were pinging you would have head it. It would have sounded like shaking a can with rocks in it under the hood during acceleration. That's about the only time it happens in most engines, so at idle or cruising you won't hear anything. Of course, this also all depends on your compression ratio. I had a 383 with 13.5:1 pistons and it pinged all the time. I ended up having to run Sunoco 94 Octane and a Holley Varijection water injection system to stop it.
