Does anyone remember when second generation Chargers were cheap?

Man am I jealous of you guys that had all the fun buying these dirt cheap back in the day.

paid $400 in 1984 for my '68 440 4 speed R/T. Drove it home and kept it for 18 years. I remember Dad bring home a '67 Coronet two door, 318 auto, white red gut in the mid '70s. Paid a couple hundred dollars, not a thing wrong with it just a used car.

View attachment 992546 View attachment 992547 I bought a lot of cars from my friend Jack, two 68 Chargers, one was an R/T, a 70 Challenger R/T 383 4 speed, and an A12 Super bee.I think I paid $700 for the two 68 Chargers, $1100 for the R/T Challenger and 5 grand for the A12 Super bee. That is the Challenger being prepped for paint in the backround.

The Challenger you bought from me.

Well for those you who feel bad, this should cause you to start drinking immediately...

Because I worked for Deals on Wheels back then and I worked the ad. Even then I knew the winged cars were special and figured that one day they would be worth something

Because I was like 17 or 18 and didn't have $89 let alone $8900, why do you think I was working for Deals on Wheels which paid me like $6 an ad?

I know that you bought it from Irvin, but didn't you sell it to Jack, then he painted it orange, and sold it to me. I know I got it from his house, and I paid him. That car was sold to someone in Australia.

Yes, in 2001 I bought my 68 Charger R/T in triple black 440 4 speed for $1800. Fender tag and build sheet included. All numbers matched.

I bought my '70 in 2001, I was looking locally all summer. Finally one popped up for $5,000 and I couldn't buy it fast enough. It was originally a 318 car with a worn out barely running 440 in it.
I would've bought all the $2,000 R/T's I could find at that time.

I bought this in 2000 with the original 318. $1700.

I'm sure those prices weren't the norm. My area isn't known for selling things cheap. I just started a new job in Jan. 2001 and was working 20 hours overtime a week, so I was just looking locally. I was looking all summer for a Charger and finally found mine in the fall, and I had a budget of $7500. Hell even in 1990 when I was looking for my first car, they were priced more than that around here, at least the advertised ones were.

I bought my first car in 1975, a 69 Charger 318 with a/c, for $700.00. It took a long time for me to save up 700 bucks when I was making $1.85 per hour.

Hmm, now you've got me thinking. Maybe I did sell it to Jack first. Had a crooked "A" pillar from some accident. Windshield never sat quite right.

Someone replaced the A pillar and welded it in the wrong place. I ended up cutting it almost completely off, then used a porta power to push it out, then I rewelded it.

These three 68 Chargers were all bought for $400 or less around 1986. The first one was a 68 R/T that ran and drove, I paid $400 for it. The second one was the best looking car in my high school parking lot, before it changed hands, and was crashed and beat to death. I paid $300 for it. It was red with a black top,and big slotted mags back in high school. The third one was a 318 car,and I probably should have saved that one,it was fairly solid but the previous owner rewired the whole car with one spool of the same gauge yellow house wire. Back then,I really wasn't skilled enough to be changing out the entire electrical system in a Charger, so we parted it out. I paid $100 for it,it didn't run.

The last “cheap” 69 I remember seeing was in a paper for $4500 around year 2000. It took me another 20 years to get it together and buy one for 21k
