They each have their own personality too.

Incredible animals, no doubt
why they are "man's best friend",
even back when they were Canis Lupus, 'man' partnered with them

I don't know about the sugar deal, in a dbl sized Olympic pool
that is truly incredible

but mine they can find a bird, turkey, quail, pheasant, grouse, ducks, geese,
swim like nobody's business, in some cold *** water
or one of their many toys
or a treat

I have a brown lab also. The oil on her skin smells bad. Any ideas?

We call our dog “the honk”, because she is always leading with her nose. Instead of walking our dog, we call that a sniff, we can’t get more than a few steps before she is sniffing something. What would normally take about 15 minutes to walk around our block takes about 1/2 hour, unless we stop to see her dog friends, then of course the butt sniffing commences. It’s ok with me tho, I live in her world, and it’s a great place to be!

If you have a good wife and a dog, and an old Mopar to bang around in, what else is there?

Old Roy dry and canned
Thats probably a part of it...and other potential issues.
Look at some quality feed - NOTHING from the evil empire [w*l m**t] - please. You might pay attention to those with aloe / indicate that they help with coat and skin. Protein levels should be based on the dog's age and activity level also, plus some breeds just have higher protein needs than others.
Feed the furries good stuff and you will be rewarded with a happier healthier dog who will stay with you longer. Its the least we can do for our fourfooted friends, right?

I think it's on Amazon now, Youtube has it too. Look for a documentary called "Pet Fooled". Our current pair are on Fromm's dry and Darwins raw. Darwins is used by both of the vets in the documentary. We stumbled onto Darwins about 10 years ago when one of the old pair, Neko, was having massive issues. We kept trying other brands of better quality foods, he would get better then revert back. Even the other dog had some issues here and there. I would put food down for them, she would walk up/take a sniff/then back away. I think thats when we were feeding them Merrick. We even tried making our own using rice and chicken home cooked without any other stuff added. Nope. Neko would have explosions from the exhaust. We kept going round and round with the vet. She thought we were imagining things. One day we had him in for an appointment where she still wanted to blow us off and he gave her a fresh brewed explosion sample. THEN she finally tested him like we wanted done. Poor guy had 3 different viral infections. Not long after that we saw the documentary. We've been using Darwins ever since. Even the cats. The cats perked up massively since they were not getting canned crap anymore. Darwins is species specific. One for dogs, one for cats. Several protein choices. It's not cheap though. Every pack is around $5. I think the payoff in health, staying away from the vets with health issues and the energy levels of the kids outweigh the cost. We go cheaper for us humans and spend the money on our kids.

I'll give it a try, thanks, Dave

I try to silently grab and put on my work boots when Rebel is in deep sleep 2 rooms away....... he wakes up every time, without exception

A bath...

sorry I couldn't resist :poke:

mine all have been raised on Purina Pro-Plan
from Puppy formula tell a year old at least, then the Sport blend
they seem to like chicken & rice best, free-fed, every day after they
are like a year old (occasional table scraps, meats mostly)

(I just put a bunch of food in their bowl, they eat when they are hungry
none have been fat, they eat about 2 to 2-1/2 cups
(Elvis eats maybe 3 cups daily) all have been 90#-110# big water dogs
(less obviously when a puppy)
& that specific food, Pro-Plan it seems to be the best for their skin & health...

I never used wet/canned food, not anymore, not for decades,
it also makes them fart & have runny ****...
I'm sure it has something to do with their hair (or smell) too

I've tried most every food, at one time, I had a dog with allergies
'alleged' food specifically 'grain allergies', that was total BS
they wanted me to switch over to 'no grain food'
(I do know corn isn't good for them) poor dude,
'the Duke' had the runs from that ****, all the time after that...
Before I switched back...
I later found out it was a grass allergy & minor flea allergies,
rarely had fleas ever too...
He'd get some weird hot spots, he'd get like a nasty red rash...
That old shitty Vet, had him on prednisone for way too long too,
for the itch/pain...
Not curing the problem, jsut treating symptoms...
Pissed me off...
I trusted them, it was my fur baby...
I
tried everything under the sun, food wise, all because of a 'bad vet',
before a 'good vet' finally found & tested for the actual real problem...

IMO again that's the Purina Pro-Plan - Chicken & Rice - Sports formula
was the best for my dogs...

My cousin has a dog/lil' yellow lab female, that's "allegedly"
really food sensitive/allergies
he swapped over to Pro-Plan Sport (finally) after spending a small fortune
on 'Vet ****' prednisone for the itch & antibiotics for the rash etc.
& special boutique $$ blends of food, after switching over
the **** went away
within a week or so, great skin now, she has no rashes etc.
All along, for like 2 years, he was using all kinds of designer
high $$$ BS fads/trends foods
He was even cooking her rice & hamburger
or expensive "vet" recommended foods prior...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mine (I've done the same forever) they get med. size Milk Bones, probably 4 a day
(that's what I used to train them to come when called, they are Johnny on the spot)
& 1 Pupperoni treat 'every night at 9:00pm', as special treats or for training
& they lick/clean off the dinner plates after we eat :poke:
before rinsing them off, they are spoiled rotten, but they're all worth it...

I'd feed my dogs whatever they needed, it's not a matter of cost...
I use what works & what has them be healthy, not the latest fad...
Way too many scammers & shysters out there, even in the
so-called dog food industry 'science'...

People don't seem to take into account 'quality poops'
if they aren't uniform & solid, the dog will have issues...
Proper food makes that happen...
Or farting constantly is another issue, which means their diet is wrong...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I learned a long time ago, most of the other designer stuff
'is all mostly hype',
marketing from "animal nutritionists'
the 'so-called experts' or science
or more like marketing & selling to Vets", that all push it... for a profit...
They make money of selling, and prescribing Rx/drugs ointments etc.,
to fix all the ailments, it really is a different business model, than most...

I have an Older sister that is a DVM, who used to be a human internist/MD
she tells it like it is, she's told me some stories about her vocation/the "dr's"
she doesn't do all the "in house" food pushing, that many vets all do...
She is a true animal lover, not just in it for $$$,
she does a crapload of her services for free, and does clinics a lot...
I just wish she didn't live in Portland/Milwaukee Or. area now...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have over 60 years with my dogs, all living long lives, one after another
Scotty Scottish Terrier, my very 1st puppy followed me everywhere
(he didn't live long) he unfortunately got poisoned by a neighbor in Oakland,
had an Akita 'Bear' big SOB he protected the Ice Co. trucks/yard,
I worked for when I was going to school...
I didn't have the heart to take him from that property, it was his
he lived to almost 20...
A few different breeds of Shepherds mostly the family dogs/sisters' dogs,
a few different, American Terrier breeds (Staff & Bull), in my 20s
great dogs too
but;
Labs mostly after HS & when I was around my dad, very young'
'Flash & Barron' a yellow & black lab respectively, both males...
I learned about Bird Dogs with them, it stuck with me, I fell in love with the breed...
Them all being very active, very healthy for the most part, very happy
& clear-eyed...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All my Labs (dogs) have lived between 14+ & 18+ years,
pretty damn good for 'A big dog breed'
that usually lives, the national average, is like maybe 12 years now...

My last (non-Lab) American Staffordshire Terrier, Alfred 80-ish #s
he lived to a week before turning 20... I was heartbroken...
He just went to sleep one night & didn't wake up, no signs of anything
just old...

My dad (their grandpa') spoils them all rotten too...

---------------------------------------------------------------------

no I really don't, not specifically, anyway
I know what works for me

(I may be used to the smell too, I do use a lot of Fabreese in the house
a lil' sprits not overboard, where they sleep bedding in his kennel or lay down regularly,
maybe like 3-4 times a month (?) it helps
)

I try to vacuum once a week, I do have a killer Kirby, that helps...
I've heard of that (like you mention) but never had a dog/Labs specifically
that ever smelt 'all that bad'...

(I'm on my 7th lab now, had them since I was like 7 y/o)

All my dogs, have all swam a lot too, usually in swimming pools
some rivers streams canals etc.
& I brush them all at least once a week
get that thick dense undercoat out so they don't shed as much

I have brown dog hair everywhere, PITA to keep up with
but worth it, 'they are the world's best dogs'

When I do bathe them, (not all that often) I use Dawn dish soap
couple times a year, worked for 50+ years, for me

not sure any of that would help

I know they do have some sort of natural skin oils,
that helps them be 'more water resistant'
so they don't freeze in cold water, but once soaked it doesn't do much

maybe she is rolling in something in her environment ?

does she have bad dander, lots of flakes coming off her ?
sure sign of their food/diet isn't right

Good luck

That right there is all you really need! Well, maybe a couple nice guitars too, just to round out the evenings! And bacon…..

I did work for a Lake County Illinois sheriff many years ago. He trained and handled the blood hounds for the department. His dogs found bodies in water that was 20 feet deep. I was doing another house a couple years later on one of the lakes and he and the dogs had found a body in the water. It is amazing the nose they have.
