In the 70's a friend bought one of the 1st V8 vega kits and put a 427 in! !st car I rode in that lifted the front so high I could not see the road in front of me!!

Fastest rides I've been in - in da olden days: Brother's '69 Ram Air IV. He clocked low 12's with it. Cousin's '64 Polara 426, he collected a load of trophies running it at strips in IL, IN, and WI back in the day. Brother's friend had a modified '66 Nova with a 427; another thrilling launch. Yeah - there's a feeling in a car that is so quick get the feeling like it'll become airborne as you're laid back in the seat. As I recollect, never rode in a car having mega go you know, 500 HP or more...can only imagine what a Hellcat or Demon must feel like.

My cousin Larry's 68 Charger R/T we buried the speedometer several times. And a new C5 corvette I bought in 97 with 6 speed manual I did 160 on the interstate in Montana (reasonable and prudent right?) was the speed limit at that time. lol

My buddies ‘71 Super Bee. Erson cam, Torker etc on a 383. The speedo said 140 when we blew a freeze plug on the block. We thought we were on fire. Seemed to take forever to stop.
We were teenagers then. Forty years later he still has it, with a hotter engine, but we never wind it up like that anymore.

We grew up in a small suburb of Milwaukee, and my brother's GTO was rumored to be the fastest car in town...lol you know like the fastest gun in the west. Well it was neat to hear this as his kid brother. About 10 miles out of town there was a popular stretch of highway where many night runs were held...coincidently I live off this same road some 4 miles north from 'the stretch'. Now a state highway and a friggin busy one. Anyway, some guys would come out of Milwaukee and cruise around our town looking for a race and one guy heard about my brother's goat wanting to run him for some cash. A date was set and some anticipation built up as this guy had a hemi stuffed into an earlier model Barracuda. Well, my brother got beat that night; but had enjoyed a nice string of wins for a while. Like the stories of the fastest...there's always somebody faster.

The Hellcats are amazing for a stock production vehicle but there’s nothing like big, raw power in an old school muscle car. We had an old school, roots supercharged big block camaro that ran around town as a kid. Thing was insane. No cage, lots of body twist and tire smoke.

In 1970, a friend showed up with his new '70 Hemi Cuda, 4 speed and let me drive it! Could barely shift fast enough to keep up with the acceleration! I was used to my '68 383 Runner and my 440 GTX, both 4 speeds. The GTX was fast but the 'cuda was brutal! WHY DIDN'T WE KEEP ALL THESE CARS??? Who knew....?

Back in high school, my buddy had a 70 Olds 442 W30 with a 455, 4 speed. Not only was it super fast and pin you in the seats, but he knew how to slam those gears. It's not just the car, you need the right guy behind the wheel to get the most out of a car !!!

My buddy’s 65 GTO he was a machinist and knew how to build an engine. Pulled on h 4 lane one night leaving Jerry’s restaurant and stopped and said “Put your feet up back under the seat Incase the flywheel lets loose!” Scared the piss out of me!

a friend had a 69 camaro this was kinda like a sleeper had a 484 big block 456 gears and 12 inch slicks that he drove on the street the car was a 10.40 car this was back in 1970 out on metro parkway

My brothers C6 Vette. Supercharged and other mods. 900+ hp.
First time he took it to the track he did a sub 10 sec time. They said to run that fast ya gotta have a roll cage. That was the first and only pass he made.
When I was little he had a 64 Goat with a warmed over 389. He worked in a speed shop then. To a little kid that was a rocket.
Hmm...My late friend's 70 Charger RT. 440, cam and 4.10s.

There was a guy that lived across the street from my sister and brother in laws house, that owned a beautiful 69 Camaro Z/28 RS. He blew the clutch and flywheel assembly out of the car,it came through the floor, went through the dashboard like a buzzsaw,and caught the top of the windshield frame peeling back the roof skin! The carnage was brutal! While there is nothing like blasting through the gears in an old school muscle car, there is something to be said for the sick fast modern muscle cars. The Hellcat Redeye can run 10s all day at the track, has a 200 mph top end,and can be driven across country with the AC on,and get decent milage doing it,without all the broken parts carnage!
