Gas stations 1/8 mile apart, one is 70 cents more a gallon than the other.

Casey's Convenience Store is pretty cheap right now. Across town though.

Living near a border where the fuel is a LOT cheaper on the other side makes sense.
As far as getting the information from people directly at the high priced stations....

Sure...why not? I have a history of being inquisitive, nosy and annoying so it isn't like it would be unusual for me.
During covid, I saw a guy with a $200,000 diesel pusher filling a 100+ gallon tank in Needles, (JUST off I-40) at $7.75/gal.
Three miles off the freeway into AZ, diesel was under $4.

I will make a gas stop at our "cheap" station as a part of a trip to the very same area, for other purposes.
I can usually save 30 or 40 cents/gal of diesel, in a truck with 35 or 60 gallon capacity. It adds up pretty quick.

As for wide price discrepancy.....
I live in AZ near Needles california.
87,10% is well above $5/gal, Diesel is near $6 in Needless. Stations are just off Interstate 40.
If you get off 40, and drive a half mile into AZ, the first station is a buck cheaper than needless, but still screwing travelers,.... cause two miles into Arizona, 87 is about $2.75, and diesel is $3.25.
I find it astounding that anybody other than the poor innocent I-40 traveler that doesn't know better, ever buys gas in Needles.
Sounds about right. The locals know. The travelers may not. The vacationers as well.

Hell, we almost pay that much 'in state fuel extortion taxes' here (like $1.12 per/gal. alone)
less up here where I live then the valley or inner-shitty's, but still extortion prices

he has cash to burn

I've always noticed the ones right next to the major hwys interstates,
are higher priced
seemingly convienance has it's huge price tag

in my travels across the country
Flying J was sort of that exception to that rule, they had decent food too
Biscuits & gravy, chicken fried steak,
I assume they made $$ of the stores & restaurants
instead of the gouging customers for diesel,
lots of interstate truckers were there filling up or sleeping all the time too

during covid
I paid $6.95 for reg. gasoline in Arroyo Grande (sh*thole),
just outside Pismo Beach (SoCal), for my 99 Dakota SLT 4wd
it was the cheapest I could find 'at the time'
& my gauge was pegged on empty, didn't want to run it dry
I put in 2 gal.s, in it
looked for another station, farther away from hwy 101
they all had $6.75+ per gal. of 87 oct swill,
& some over $7.00+ for that **** swill

When I had to go down there to retrieve my dad from the hospital,
on his SIRs club RV trip, that April 2021 IIRC
Dad drank several (like 3-4) 1.75mltr bottles of 'rott gut'/boozes
& messed him up bigtime over like a 2 week period...
Just to bring my truck 2002 F350 7.3 ltr 6 speed dually Diesel 4x4
& Jayco 5th wheel travel trailer, back home
after he was hospitalized for extreme pain in his back,
it was from diverticulitis (an intestinal disorder) he was a mess,
so was my trailer...

Diesel was nearly $8 per/gal at the cheapest place I could find,
in away from the freeway/hwy 101...
On dad's dime not mine, I wasn't going to pay for his stupidity
there were places down there selling it for $9 a gal
I paid $272 for a/1 tank of diesel fuel, 34 gal's 'shitty diesel I may add',
Joesmoe's noname crap station, should have gone to Shell or Chevron
wouldn't have cost me as much in the long run (less water I assume)
that crap had water in it, had to replace the primary filters later,
several hundred $$s
301 miles back to home, 7 hrs later

& down the hill from US in Sonora
where it was $4.89 per/gal for diesel, even at Shell
