H vs X Pipe ?

I’ve had h and x on various cars over the years. I used to hear the x make a whooshing sound in the mid range like the harmonics changed at certain rpm. My current car got the x pipe last year and it’s the first one I’ve done with resonators. I no longer hear that sound. I’m done with drones so all my cars going forward will get resonators. That change has done more than any pipes ever have on my stuff. I’ve run the dynomax muffs before and this is totally different sound.

The h will work best if you paint stripe down the head pipe and let it burn off. Where it ends is where the h wants to go. Packaging is a problem with that deal so do what you have to.
 
I wonder if length of the H-pipe makes a difference. I'd like to try one, but it would have to be four or five feet long. (Fenderwell headers)
I like the mufflers I've got for volume, but the tone is terrible with each side exiting in front of rear tires. Sounds like a boat.

not as long as a pipe would need to be if you had side exhaust, it'd be 4'+
don't know why it wouldn't work other than packaging issues getting over/under around everything

Yeah, the maxwedge exhaust was clearly designed to be run uncapped.
If I remember right, one of the Hemi race package cars came with a SINGLE exhaust from the factory. They knew it would be gone in under a week!
 
I’ll add that my exhaust guy is a gearhead and had a 69 Camaro drag car for a long time. He tried h pipe, x pipe, and no balance pipe at all. Said they all ETed exactly the same. He ended with the x pipe because that was the last one he put on the car. Only did it because it cost him virtually nothing to do the experiment. He’s done 5-6 cars for me. I will go nowhere else.
 
As far as performance the F.A.S.T. racing series cars seem to only run x pipes although h pipes are allowed. Perhaps their limit of 2 1/2" exhaust and manifolds respond more then headers and 3"? But if h pipe were better..I would think they would be running them? Maybe there are some h pipes systems competing that I am not aware of? They will spend big $ to go a tenth quicker in that class.

Almost no difference in power 1-2 hp maybe, between the 2 systems X or H pipes
I think for them it's more all about packaging & what fits
& has a stock idle sound (F.A.S.T. rules prerequisite, or used to be)

& you're right they will spend $1,000+ to get a 0.001-th (1/1000) of a sec. advantage
let alone a 1/10th
 
I believe the x is probably better for power. The question is, how much? I believe it's not enough increase over a simple H (or no crossover at all!) to justify the expense and inconvenience.
If you want one, and the expense doesn't bother you, go for it.
I would like to hear a sound test, using an h, an x, and none at all, using the same mufflers. The trouble is, its almost impossible to tell the diferencee over a crappy little computer speaker, or worse yet, a phone.
