Heater Hose Perfection

Good Day All,

So I have few questions regarding the correct heater hose set up for my 68 Charger 440.

It is a non A/C car. The short/low bracket on the passenger side valve cover. I have the correct numbered hoses....1300 523 and 2435 961.

My outstanding questions are...

1. Confirm that the hose labeled 1300 523 goes from the firewall nipple closet to the engine then crossed over to the outside water pump nipple?

2. The crossover in the hoses occurs between the firewall and the bracket on the valve cover? See attached photo from FSM.

3. Reading the numbers on the hoses after installed...should the numbers be "upright" as reading from "standing outside the engine" or as if you were "sitting on the engine"? I have seen both arrangements in photos from experienced builders.

4. Are there any aluminum straps that would go on the hoses as per factory and what are their placement?

It would be my opinion that the assembly line worker installing the heater hose on your 68 charger didn’t give two shits as to whether or not the numbers were visible from any angle. They would have reached to the bulk roll, cut off a predetermined length and slapped it on as fast as they could.
So, if you really want yo have it look authentic, get your wife, or local librarian to do as I’m sure they wouldn’t care either..

I got the "beat down" from a few friends for not having my hoses crossed per the service manual on the X.....I had to succumb because the judges would pick that error out.....I fought hard on this fact and I had proof showing survivors without the hoses crossed...

The straps were "plant" dependent.....this is also a well debated issue amongst the OE crowd....My survivor 69 charger had them but the GTX the hoses were changed. LR supposedly didn't use them based on a highly credible source.....

Things is on the line they didn't give a rats azz which hose went where and if a strap or two was placed....

Yep.. '69 looks so much cleaner in parallel, but on the '68 with rocker cover bracket (vs the '69/70 fender bracket) I'd do it per the FSM as it looks right that way.

Watch out for the crap reproduction hoses that have a very thick wall. You'll break the heater core putting them on.

Anyone have a better picture of the bracket on the valve cover. I wondered why there was now place on the inner fender for the hose bracket on my 68. I have a bracket but it must be for 69-70.

I'm with most everyone, it doesn't matter because it will heat either way. Also I kinda like the neatness of keeping them in line.

I agree and I bet on the line it was quicker to install that way.....which is why some made it out that way...

One more comment, this is actually for a different car but in the late eighties the manufacturer I was working for came out with the TSB about heater hose routing and noise concerns.. It seems that by connecting the hoses backwards air could get trapped in the heater core & you would get a customer complaint of gurgling noises behind the dash...

Agreed.. have that in my '98 plow truck right now because I didn't bleed the air out after a water pump change. .. won't happen on a '69 heater core.

When I had air in the line, I had to bleed the air out, because it over heated.

Recently put new hoses on mine and just made sure there was enough of a curve to avoid interference with the 2-4-6 plug wire loom. After that basically a straight connection to the firewall.

I know this is an old post .... but any chance do you have a part number/brand on that upper radiator hose in the picture?

I can check later today. I remember having to do some minor trimming to get it to fit right at the upper rad fitting.
