I have three rifles with thumb hole stocks, two came with that style stock while the one I just installed was by choice. The biggest problem I have found with many of the composite stocks is that they are smooth even though they may have some type of texturing.
The thumb hole style stock allows better control of the weapon when texturing is not an option on the stock itself. Several production weapons have been offered with thumb hole stocks due to the safety aspect of smooth stocks by giving the shooter a way of holding on to their weapon.
