Making progress

more progress

lessons learned and more progress..

Lessons first.

The first one comes in subparts
1. New sheet metal is easier to work with than rust
a When working with rust don't lose sight of the goal
b don't work with rust if at all possible
c rust never sleeps...LOL

2 Don't wear loose clothing when spraying. When you lean over it touches your work

3. spray from the top down and leaning over your work isn't an issue

4. Good lighting would sure help a freaking tremendous amount

5. a clean work space and area to walk around the car when spraying the paint is a must

6 God save me as I try to line up the doors before I paint the car.

I still have plenty of work left before painting but the propane heat was causing oxidation on the bare metal at an exponential rate... I had to da the whole car with 80 to get the surface rust off before priming it. Thats 2 coats, it needs 1 or 2 more. At the same time I am ripping out the drivers floor and will do the same to the passenger side as well. Starting to think about exhaust now as well.. headers or not

I just had a birthday and realized I'm getting to old for this, I think the car is starting to sap my life's energy..... I think it looks better than when I started but its been such a tough battle I don't know what it looks like anymore.
I'll sit back and take a toll of things one day... and in the end I'm still not going to be 100% happy until those quarters are properly replaced

Another lesson learned.. fast ratio steering wont work to good on this car. Not without some custom exhaust work and headers are a no go for sure so... $199 down the drain :icon_axe::icon_hang:
dash is in though and I'm one step closer to paint.. progress is slowing down now though as the finer details are taking more time to get right.

Should I paint the roof before the vinyl top or just prime it and leave it?

Also I have an idea to combine the side scoop trim from the GTX and the Sport Satellite.. thoughts ?
THe SS piece is chrome and the potmetal scoop from the GTX/RR can be chrome , they are in great shape...
Since the car is a custom b body anyway.. would it look tacky or cool,

can anyone photo chop that?

rusted frozen ebrake system removed as well... the cock pit has been completely gutted and started over..LOL
it was a just a quick paint job to make it look better. OY!
Need to send the speedo and tic toc off to get them worked over.. wont be long before I am driving this.. getting my second wind on it now.. thxc for the words of encouragement... going to tackle the passenger floor tomorrow

On a good note, I assesed this car correctly. There was no frame rot or damage and the door pillars and rockers are perfect as well as the front clip and doors....

Where is odsvet to eat his crow ? I've already brought the car a lot further than his shriveled up bitter dusty old *** will ever give me credit for and the finish line is ahead. No one has worked on this car but me using this board for reference and the manual I have brought this beast back from being 7/8's in the grave and all for about $12,000 less than I was told it would take.. Not done yet of course and there will be more money spent... but no where near 12k.. the sheet metal that should have been replaced/will be in the future is only $1875 and that puts me in under 5k for restoration with B+ quality work... it wont be a show car but it will be a damn nice driver

Don't take me the wrong way here 99ss, but to give odsvet a bit of credit he's coming from a professional auto/body/resto mentality. In that world there is no making a pretty good daily driver. Nothing is taken for granted or looked over for next time.....from the primer that falls on the car to the quality of welds replacing every square inch of questionable metal, to stay at the top of the hill..it has to be the best in every aspect. Main reason being is that is what the customer expects and their work reflects them down the road. Honestly most body/resto shops will not even touch something that the customer wants to look daily driver good. It's their reputation on the line and would be impossible to make any money on. Full Restorations at that level do fall in the realm of what he brought up. No doubt about it. But you're also dealing with the overhead of a business as well a very large amount of work done by paid, trainned auto body technicians. That being said, I dont agree with how he came down on you car/dream in such a rude manner. That just comes down to, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. Suggestion is one thing, ridiculing is another. You should be proud of the amount of work you have done as well as your drive and ambition to do so. In the end it's your car, your doing the work and as long as you're happy without regret, job well done. Surely not everyone is going to like your ideals on how you approach your project, but take that with a grain of salt. Reflect on suggestions when you can, leave the negative stuff in the dirt.. I look forward to watching your progress and best of luck moving forward.

99SS, I think you've been doing a great job.. Some day when you finish this and think back on it, you'll have a remembrance of all the work and learning that you committed yourself to. Doing a car all on your own brings many rewards, Be something to tell others, something you will be proud of when you say, i did it on my own. I wish you good luck and go back to my lurking and watching, great job!

Prop I agree with you 100%. If a person is looking for a show car odsvet is probably one of the best in the country. But this was a Sport Satellite and never going to be worth more than in the eye of the beholder. He attacked me and who knows why but yes I am bitter about it still and to be honest will hold it against him until he appologizes.... But your are right I should and need to move on from his comments....

Thx Ron I appreciate that.

I try and do something on it each day and sooner or later it will be on the road.
Going to teach myself to weld this week and get the floors done.

The plan is to re-visit this restoration after I restore a 79 z28 and sell it. I then will replace the quarters and rear deck filler. Then the car will be done. It takes steps sometimes unless you hve deep pockets. What I am doing now will buy me a year or two on the rear quarters, maybe more.. but the plan is to replace them when the time and money is available. I'm not killing myself on them at this point, just making them presentable. I paid 2950 for this car and have about 1800 into it in parts so far, maybe a little more. The labor is free...LOL

Shooting paint today.. going to do the roof and hood stripes first, then do the blue tomorrow..... its good enough for now, I think it might look better than I give it credit for but we'll see... anything is an improvement over what it was. I'll fiinish the interior as I go. Protect the rockers when I do the floors... LOL hoping to drive it Sunday..hahahahaha 1000 to 1 I make it...

scared I'm gonna suck painting it..LOL but that hasn't stopped me so far..hahahaha

LOL! Well, if you don't have a whole lot of experience painting, I can see why that would make a guy nervous..Get yourself some practice panels, even if you can only find some large chunks of carboard or wood. Get your spray pattern, correct needle and flow dialed in on that before you go laying it on the car...Definitely doesn't cover all the variables of painting, but at least you can get some confidence going starting there.
Take your time and figure out a flow in where you're gonna start and where you're going to end on painting it.

Best of luck to you....

P.S. make sure you have regulated, clean, oil free, dry air......Even a air/oil filter, small dessicant filter and a toss out Whirlwind filter at the gun will make a huge difference vs. just a run of the mill air/oil/reg filter.... Clean the surface well with a decent paint prep/cleaner and don't forget the tac cloths...

A man much smarter than me once said .... " It is what it is"

Knowing a vinyl roof is going on I wasnt so worried about matching the lines up and I guessed where the trim would be... LOL I'm sure that will haunt me later...
Blue goes on tomorrow after the black hardens a bit so I can tape over it without effing it up

actualy didnt come out that bad, I'm giddy about squirting the blue tomorrow..LOL
Cant wait, I think it will be decent enough. I hit the car with 400 grit paper one more time to make sure we got some smoothness to work with..
Waiting on the passenger side floor to arrive and I need seats....

would bucket seats from a 74 or so B-body look out of place?

There is a difference in them, I always say do it the way you like it, its just my thoughts that it would be more suited to the same year seats, But your the one who needs to enjoy it, lol, i think you sound like your havin a ball already, they wont be able to keep you on the farm when your done! Good luck with the blue! looks great...

They are the only mopar bucket seats around..LOL
there are some nice mercedes buckets from a 69 or something.. low backs... limited choices out here..... ton of crap though from hondas and there are some mustang buckets and porsche buckets I thought about... or I paylike 190 in freight and like 600 for the right seats if I cna find them... its the toughest thing left for me to decide.. what fraking seats to put in.... I wish I could buy the right ones locally for under 400 but you know what they say.. wish in one hand...hahahahaha.... I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve ......

OMG..LOL
http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/pts/2830511270.html

$1200??

Ok, Ill tell ya what i would do, If you can get those, do it and later down the line maybe you could find the right set and change them.. Best of both, now and later... No i think id pass on the Challenger seats!

I know how you feel about Christmas eve, Been there done that, hey! it be late, good luck, hope you post pic tomorrow!!!

Get the ones you like... if there it, thats what to do, You have to be happy yourself, the 71-74 seats are a closer match to a 70, id think, maybe easier to find and cheaper, i would think anyway... Im out of edit room hear lol.. Good luck, ill be watching!
