The Chrysler starter caught a lot of flack due to its sound but what I never understood why the old GM starter got a pass. That thing sounded like a tin can full of marbles and chewed many starter ring gears to pieces.

Guys, the old "Hammtramack Hummingbird" starters are NOT direct drive.
They are the gear reduction type.
