What's the consensus on mixing brands (different primer and paint), is it bad to do? Do some paints not work with some primers? Just wondering because I'm having the doors on a project soda blasted and the guy doing them said he would prime them too. He is going to use Transtar. Will I have a problem if I use a different brand paint? I intend to have the original (ford) color mixed.

Just stay with the same type or family of paint system.
You don't want to mix urethane and lacquer paint systems.
I have used alot of transtar products and have had very good luck. My 67 dart was epoxy primered with transtar after it was medi blasted. I have also used there clears over dupont, PPG, and ICI basecoats.

Did you sand the epoxy primer and if so with what grit(s)? How many coats of primer?

I have never had any experience with soda blasting but I have heard about some of the big paint companies not standing behind their products if it is applied over soda blasted metal. I assume your blaster knows how to prep for primer after blasting. Find out what kind of primer he will use and stay within the same chemical family. I prefer to us epoxy primer over bare metal. If you don't have any filler to put on then prep the door for color per the manufacturers spec sheet. I have used SPI and PPG epoxy primer, DuPont Chroma base color and SPI, DuPont, and a few other brands of clears over the base color with no ill effects. Just follow the spec sheets for flash times. Here is a little read on soda blasting issues.

Thanks, that thread has some good info. I asked the guy what medium he used and he said aluminum oxide. I don't know if it can have the same problems as soda.

You should be ok with that as long as the bare steel is cleaned good before primer.

Transtar isnt bad stuff I have used it before I would stick with using all there products together tho don't go mixing.

Alum Oxide is not the same as Soda, Soda does leave a powdery stuff behind paint wont bond to needs to be washed and neutralized after blasting is all. I have never tried it I do not know any thing about other than it must be washed fairly well after ward.

I do a Metal prep before paint any way that washes and Rust proofs the metal before I spray any paint.
