I'm working on a '69 Coronet and I would like to know how the factory would have done the underside of the car. Did they paint them body color? Somebody told me there was overspray below the rockers but what else did the factory do? Thanks

The factory had an 7 part dipping process for the body once it left the metal shop. Step 8 was red epoxy primer to exterior/wheel well areas and the final step was paint.

Step 1 through 3 were hot rinses for the body
Step 4 was a phosphate dip to provide etch for paint adhesion
Step 5 was a rinse
Step 6 was a conditioning solution
Step 7 was the grey "Dip Primer" up to the bottom level of the heater hose outlets on the firewall(exterior got washed off to remove the dip primer)
Step 8 was red epoxy primer on exterior and wheel well areas

(excluding the baking steps)

A factory original paint job is a crappy one...no pun intended....sags, runs, debris, fisheyes, orange peel, poor coverage and overspray.....

As far as going 100% factory original like...my thread here shows this beautifully. Or you can go the more simpler route and shoot the whole underside with the dip primer and then imagine a drunk line worker in a pit on one side with a paint gun shooting from mid door down and around the perimeter of that side. They did NOT back spray on the rockers....They went in one direction towards the tunnel on each side. Hence the back side of the rockers do not have paint and the overspray ends up towards the tunnel......

Here is my thread below.....
