My 1967 Belvedere Convertible Plans and Restoration (aka - Mad Scientist Build)

Sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love the rear seats and your roll bar-seat brace came out really clean. Looking good Kahn

Working on reattaching the passenger side front of the wheel well . . .

While I've got the momentum, and the goal in site, I'm working on attaching the passenger side front of the wheel well to gain me that extra 2" of clearance for my wheels ( should I need it ).

So far, so good . . . it seems to be going well ( and faster than the driver side )

sm_passreattach01.jpg

I know there is pitting on this side ( not like my nice driver side ) . . . but the plan is to get it back installed, and then cut out the bad stuff, and piece in some good metal - this will give me the relative shape of the new metal and allow me to mold it as needed, a little piece at a time . . .

It's ALIVE . . . . Igor is now alive and standing watch on the Belvedere

Had to take a little time and figure out what I was going to do with those wrenches that I got at the car show, and how to use them to create Igor . . .

And here's a current shot of Igor riding in the back seat of the Belvedere . . .

sm_igor01.jpg

I've still got a couple more wrenches and plan on adding a few extra talons on the feet and arms . . . I've got the wrenches, I might as well use them . . .

So . . . there could be more to come . . .

Rebuilding the bottom half of the passenger rear quarter panel... one piece at a time

Been dreading this, but it's never going to get done if I don't get started on it . . . turns out that the front of the wheel well is also really bad and will need to be cut out and replaced too . . . so I'm off to making my own patch panels and trying to match the shape of the driver side ( which I'm really happy with how it turned out )

So, here goes . . . first we need to get the metal cut and shaped . . .

sm_passrear01.jpg

And then I need to get it fitted into place and see how it's going to fit . . .

sm_passrear02.jpg

And now it's time to start with the Mig And Grind ( MAG ) technology again . . . see if we can get this side looking more like a car quarter panel then swiss cheese . . .

Git er done! Looking really good Kahn.

Made a little more progress . . . then ran out of gas ( literally ) . . . ARGH ! ! !

Was trying to make some more progress on the back lower part of the quarter panel, and I ran out of gas, literally, not mo jo related . . . I'll be heading to the welding supply store to pick up some more welding gas this week so I can get back to it . . .

sm_passrear03.jpg

There is also a little panel behind the very back of this fender, that was really rotted out, and I was able to get it cleaned up and get a new piece of metal welded in place there too . . . that really is beginning to stiffen up the quarter panel ! ! !

If I can just get this side fabricated and come out somewhat like the driver side did . . .I think I'll be very happy with the results ! ! !

Thanks 747Mopar . . . I'm seeing a light at the end of the tunnel . . .and it's getting brighter ! ! !

Man oh man. You've been doing a ton of work. It makes me tired just to look at what you've done! lol

And don't know if anyone ever mentioned what those old cars that are rotting away were but the 1st one is a 64 Ford Galaxie and the other looks like a 66-67 Fury....

Been a very busy couple weeks

Thanks Cranky, I've still go a long way to go ! ! ! But thanks for the kind words ! ! ! I've also got a bunch to update, and I'll update the rusty cars too - thanks for the information !

Been a very busy couple weeks and I've got to get some updates in . . . trying to get back to the Vert - but some Spring cleaning has got in the way. First I got a bunch of brush cleaned up on about an acre of my property, and had a brush burn with my neighbor - 1/3-1/2 of this pile was my stuff . . .

The start of the burn - started from both ends . . .

Brushburn01.jpg

Further along . . .

Brushburn02.jpg

It got very very intense and was quite tall for a while . . .

Next, I've been waiting for my neighbor to return and finish the rest of my carport ( for a year - I know - idiot for waiting ) so I finally gave up, called a guy on Monday, he was at my house Monday night, and the concrete was poured today ( 3 days ! ) glad to have this completed - finally . . .

First - Wednesday night - cleaned up and prepared the carport . . .

sm_carportready.jpg

The start of the pouring of the parking pad ( there is a walkway and some approach pads too )

sm_carportstarting.jpg

Got most of the concrete in the parking pad down . . .

sm_carportpadmostly.jpg

The completed work - walkway and all the pads and approach . . .

sm_carportconcrete.jpg

SURE am glad to finally get this one off the project list ( wait - it still needs some work with painting )

Car update - Cranky - the funny thing is the 64 Galaxie is gone . . .

sm_oldcar1.jpg

Notice, not only is the car gone, so is the aluminum garage that was in back of this house too . . . LMAO

sm_rustycaronegone.jpg

But the 66-67 Satellite is still there . . .sad thing to watch this . . .

Have not forgotten about the convertible . . .

Trying to get some Spring Cleaning done, and work on the Belvedere too . . . I can't tell you how happy I am to finally have that concrete poured for the carport . . . I've spent most of the day cleaning up spider webs, and trying to get a full second coat of paint on the carport so I can stick a fork in it . . .

But I did get out to the shop and spend some time with the Belvedere too . . .

sm_passrear04.jpg

Rear part of the quarter is moving along nicely, just fighting with the pin holes that just don't want to cooperate . . . then it'll be time to fab up a wheel well lip and get the quarter panel attached to the outer-inner wheel well . . .

After that - it's the tunnel hump - and I think that'll put an end to the metal work ? ? ?

Can I see a light at the end of the tunnel ? ? ? ?

carport looking good, the mad scientist build is rocking. everything looking khan, keep it going.

We sound allot alike, concrete and clearing brush is what I've been up to as well. Quarter is looking good Kahn.

I think I'll take a couple of days off work this week.....just to continue reading this build thread :headbang:
So far up to page 25, and it is just so interesting and informative. Some really cool advice and encouragement going on here (and other similar threads also) and it shows what a great atmosphere this site can generate.
Keep up the great work mate. :eusa_dance:

Pre race airshow - over my house

While working on painting my carport, I was lucky to watch a pre-race airshow put on by the fighter jets . . . my house is just north of the Concord runway, and the jets were putting on a how at the airport - I was able to watch some if it at my house - including jets banked so steep that they had no vertical lift ( except for their rudder ) and were being held up by sheer G-force and the propulsion provided by the engines . . . and with the after burners kicked in, they were loud !

Here were a couple pictures of the jets that I was able to catch between the trees . . .

sm_fighter01.jpg

Pretty impressive ! ! !

Oh, the race is the Cocoa-Cola 600 at Lowes Motor Speedway - it's about 10 miles ( as the crow flies ) from my house.

I'm not very far from Ellington field and get to watch from my back yard. Several years ago an F-4 buzzed the neighborhood. Never heard or saw it coming and when it went by, it scared the living crap out of me. I'm sure it got several other neighborhoods too lol. Thing is, that was the only time it happened. I imagine they logged a lot of complaints.

I'm always impressed by what those pilots can do, my dad used to take us to the Oshkosh show and I loved the WWII fly overs with the dummy bombs going off. The Harrier was my favorite to watch, vertical takeoffs followed by reverses and rotating maneuvers.... very cool. My dad always had plans on getting his license but heart problems meant a no go so he just ordered an ultra light that he will fly out of my field haha, ain't keeping him down!

nice job on the carport. looks like you have all of your duck in a very neat and tidy row.

Everything is looking great Kahn, Both the carport and your metal work. It's been non-stop spring cleaning and yard work here too but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy and get a bit of satisfaction out of it. Right now I'm dying for some rain to keep things green! It's in the forecast damn near every day and never comes!!

You are getting super close to body work and I can't wait to watch the process!

Cheers my brother!
