Need New Truck!

“Better to have it and never need it, than need it and never have it”. I have owned 1, 2 wheel drive truck and won’t again. Not as a daily driver/ primary truck. Play truck? Maybe. I use 4x4 all the time here in Mississippi. If you think you can pull a 9,500 pound tractor on a 7,000 pound trailer across wet or soft ground in 2wd, without something else pulling you, color me impressed. If @Road Rat never Leaves hard ground then 4x4 is probably unnecessary. But if it can be had in the budget, why not?

Never off road and the trailer I’ll pull with it would a 6 x 12 flat. Grew up in Colorado and 4wd is a must. If I find a good truck and it has 4wd it won’t be a deterrent to buying it. I see the price a bit more but on a used truck not that much.

Dude I'm in FL and I'm locking my 4x4 in atleast 2-3x a week!
You do understand most of fl is a swamp right? And dirt/muddy roads and most everyone can't drive here and end up in the ditch so there's alot of pulled out all the time !
And everything here basically stays wet and soupy !
I wouldn't not have a 4x4 here ,mountain s or heavy Snow areas !


That being said 4x4 are more money here over 2wd .
A old Dakota is the way with the 318 mag
I picked up a f250 king ranch 4door 4wd for $10k
I see the little trucks for $3-4 in my area

on them oftentimes.

Yes, I assumed since you're in PA that you'd be one of those who brags about never needing 4WD
in 2 foot snows - uphill - with a head wind.

Well my 2012 GMC 2500 is sort of a hybrid now. Rusted out lower fenders near wheel wells are now part 71 b body sheet metal. Only problem is the 71 steel is about 3 times the thickness.

I had a '98 Dakota with that 3.7 (318 with two cylinders lopped off). It's a crude engine but quite
reliable and does the job, just not very thrifty on fuel.
I loved that little truck, just outgrew it is all.

That would be a 3.9....the 3.7 is a spin off of the 4.7 which....one is a V8 and the other is a V6 with both engine families. 5.2 V8 and 3.9 V6----------4.7 V8 and 3.7 V6. I've heard many say the 3.7 is a decent engine which is odd to me since it's pretty much the same as the 4.7.

The insurance adjuster left today and said my truck is totaled. So I guess I have to start looking in earnest. I really like the looks of the 2nd gen Dakotas. My brother in-law had a first gen but problems with the manual transmission. Anybody else see any tranny problems?

I guess whatever mileage and sacrifice in ride quality with a 4wd would probably be negligible. The last 4wd I had was a 94, not that nice a ride. I actually had good luck with the Sport Trac in the 12 years I had it. It owes me nothing. Hope I find a good replacement.

I have a 95 and a 96 Dakota. Both are reg cab short box and 2wd. Wish my 95 was as nice looking as the 96 is because I like the 95 better. The 96 has the OBD II system and well, don't like the way it acts. Had a 2000 Durango with the OBD II and it acted much better.

Never had a 4wd because usually never go to places where it's needed but have pulled out several stuck 4wd trucks including a Jeep or two. Had to 'rescue' my nephew twice in the same day when he decided to play in the flood control ditch behind my place lol. Drunk Idiot. I do like limited slip diffs though. Got rained out at the track once and many of us were parked out on the grass. By the time we got loaded up, the ground was pretty wet. The 4wd guys didn't have any problem getting out but the ones with limited slip 2wd had a bit of spin but managed to get out ok while the ones with 2wd and no limited slip sat there and dug holes.

Doesn't matter how thick poorly treated steel is....rust will attack it. It just takes a little longer for the holes to show up....

My father ( who lives with me) bought this Tacoma new in 2015. I have lived in Central Florida for 8 years ( after being born and lived in Oregon for 57). I have never had a 2 wheel drive Pickup until this one.. Absolutely NO need for 4 wheel drive since purchasing this truck EVER... If you go swamp crawling in the everglades ( no thanks) I guess, and to the Tennessee guy who knows everything for EVERYBODY in EVERY State, blow it out your ***..

Second good for you you don't use your truck ! I don't go mud bogging! I do however part on side of road and because fl is always wet I need 4x4 to get out of my own yard !
If you live in a city that is all concrete yeah you'll never need 4x4
But some of us work on road ways or constitution sites or farms or....
Witch most involve going off a paved road ! Not everyone can buy a new shiney truck and drive back and forth on perfect paved roads to our air conditioned office!
Hell even driving to our local dump I need 4x4 to get in and out!

Again if you got a life that doesn't involve real work you don't need it . Please keep your stupidity to yourself what works for you doesn't work for all!

I personally love my old 92 Dakota extended cab, 3.9,5 spd 8&1/4 with 3:21 rear diff . More reliable than the day is long currently got around 450k on the little booger, one repaint , with mopar bed and fenders from another, looking at round 3 , currently cleaning up frame and ready to set my little red Dakota express bed on it in place of the stocker. Yes that is the actual mileage, no overhaul on any just lots of love and I got awesome reliability out of it. Just have to appreciate it for what it is not what it isn’t I’ve owned it 23 years, shooting for a half million on one engine and drive line.... replaced several gaskets etc ., but never an overhaul... imports can eat my tail pipe!
