New Rear End?

So yesterday I took my Satellite out for a drive and floored it from a dead stop. Luckily this was on a dead end road. Long story short, I think the rear right axle broke. The drive shaft still spins but the car won't move. If I jack up the rear end, I can pull the rear right tire in and out a bit.

My Satellite was a factory 318 car but now has a 440 in it. The engine and transmission were upgraded together so it has an A-727 automatic. This occurred before I bought it. However, the rear differential is still the stock 8.25. I believe that this is why the axle broke.

If I upgrade my differential to a 9.25, what gearing ratio would I want? Would a 9.25 bolt right in without any modification, or would it not fit? What are the chances another axle breaks if I just replace the broken one? I should add that I don't know if the axle was rusty to begin with. What other options do I have? Any advice will be helpful. Thank you in advance.

You need to tell us how much HP/Torque this motor is turning. That will give insight as to which rear end you should use.

if you broke the axle with a 8.25, be glad you weren't moving quick as its a C-clipped rear and that axle would have been walking out on you!

I went from an 8.25 to a 9.25 nice upgrade. However the 9.25 was already set up for my 1973 charger, so everything bolted up leaf springs drive shaft. I'm running a 3.55, but i drive the car everyday. Depends all on what you want out of the car. These guys know pretty much everything so they'll set you up great.

8.75 are sweet rear ends. Strong and you can swap out the center chunks very easily. Only problem is they're expensive. You'll have to wait for a deal if you aren't made of money. There's quite a few 9.25 out there. Check a junkyard near you and take one out of a ram or Dakota

What year is your car? Not all axles are the same width. 71 and up are wider than the 68-70's......plus you may have to shorten your drive shaft since the 9 1/4 is a bit bigger than the 8 1/4 rear.

All I had to do was get a 7260 X 7290 COMBINATION U JOINT for the drive shaft when i went 8.25 to 9.25 it's like .2" longer than the 8.25.

Hey there nuteguy...Most guys run the 8 3/4, Parts are plentiful and there Extremely Dependable, H.P & T.Q Definitely come into play... I'm running 550 H.P/ 600 T.Q with a
8 3/4 and upgraded to 35~spline Axles with a spool, most guys don't like the spool on the street but im okay with it, i was told by another member that they Now make a posi type carrier for the 8 3/4 that accepts the 35 spline Axles and realistically that's what ill do in the future or I'll just run a Danna, and just re-use my Axles, ANYWHOO !! Good Luck ! and spend the Money-Bro "Don't Be Cheap" ...Lol

Thanks for all the feedback. I have no clue about horsepower or torque. It's a 1972 Satellite. I ordered these two axles to replace the broken one. I'll be returning the one which doesn't fit.

I'm looking to get a good daily driver but it would be nice to have the ability to smoke some tires if I ever want to. I run 275s in the back and front if that matters.

Do I really need a new rear end though? I would like one but I don't have the money for one right now. Also, if I do look in a junkyard, what would I specifically want to be looking for? I really don't know too much about this.

have you taken the rear apart to see what is broken yet?i don't see where you have taken anything apart.always start with a good inspection before you buy any parts.

Measure your axle size and google away! I didn't know about 9.25 rears until one came with my parts car. PLopped it in and i'm very very happy with it! I ran a 8.25 2.71 ratio one tire frier. and the 9.25 came with a 3.55 posi. World of difference! The carrier is much beefier in the 9.25. The 8.25 aren't made for big block horse power :headbang:

One of the key factors in considering this exchange is the ease of availability. Used extensively in C-body full-size and B-, R-, J-, and M-bodied mid-size cars, 9-1/4-in. rears were also in many light-duty pickup trucks and van bodies. The 9-1/4-in. axle assembly was also produced in both open-gear and Sure-Grip positraction for over 25 years. The large pinion shaft diameter and the beefy 31-spline axles make the 9-1/4-in. a workhorse differential that can be adapted to many driving conditions, whether it's propelling your classic luxury car to the car show, launching a street car down the quarter-mile, or helping haul firewood in your truck.

Also, i'm confused, why do you have 275's in the front? I had 255's and it was so hard to turn, went down to 225 and it's easy and gas mileage went up.

Thanks Mopar-Charger. I got 275s up front because they were lightly used and cheap. If I had the opportunity I would have preferred 255s but the 275s were there.

Ideally I would buy a new Dana 60 Crate Axle. Go big or go home, right? Haha. What gearing would I want for something like that? Everyone I've asked says 4.10 to roast tires but I don't know if that would be right for me. Any idea about fitting issues with a Dana 60?

You can get a brand new pair of cooper cobra radials for less than $80 a piece. Bought mine about three years ago still about 70% tread and I drive my car everyday.

The 9.25 is no dana, but a dana would be used more for HIGH HIGH horse power. guys use them for the track or end up throwing 600+hp at it. At the point I would just go with a 8 3/4 and save my money.

Do you drive your car everyday? 4.10 will take you to the moon if you aren't already headed to the track. I have a 3.55 and It's perfect for my car. The few times I run on the highway i'll do about 3k RPMS. Not fun, but she cruises.

Yeah I'll be driving her every day.

I have yet to find an 8.75 or 9.25 without digging around on craigslist or in junkyards. I'll probably do that before I order a Dana to explore my options.

A 3.55 seems to be right for a lot of people. Are there any downsides to a 4.10? In terms of the track, there is none nearby but I would love to go one day for fun. That's a ways away though, I still have a decent bit of work to do before even thinking about the track.

If the new axle shafts for the 8.25 work. Use that and just keep an eye out for a good deal on a 8 3/4 or 9.25. They will surely come up.

I'd stick with a 3.55, even then it might be too much. Sounds like you're on a budget, I just turned 18, been working on my car for the past three years. She's my daily and starts perfectly whenever I turn the key. Whole drive train is new, suspension, all that is needed is some body work. those endless nights laying in oil paid off. I know exactly how you feel, sucks when money is short. put it together piece by piece and you'll surely have a beautiful car by the end of the day.

What other things do you need to do to your car? pictures?

Sounds good. Thank you for all of the help with that.

Haha yeah I just turned 17 and money is definitely tight. I need to get my rear running lights working and horn too. Those are priorities. I only got my car a few weeks ago but have been working on her and loving it. I got turn signals working and hooked up a new carb. Some interior cleaning is on the list as well. I should make sure my brakes are in good condition because right now they probably aren't. Improvements are sure to come over time.

Here is my welcome wagon thread which has some pictures. The one of the engine bay is outdated because of the new carb and air cleaner but it'll have to do for now.

Beautiful. I hope my Satellite will follow a similar path eventually.
