So yesterday I took my Satellite out for a drive and floored it from a dead stop. Luckily this was on a dead end road. Long story short, I think the rear right axle broke. The drive shaft still spins but the car won't move. If I jack up the rear end, I can pull the rear right tire in and out a bit.
My Satellite was a factory 318 car but now has a 440 in it. The engine and transmission were upgraded together so it has an A-727 automatic. This occurred before I bought it. However, the rear differential is still the stock 8.25. I believe that this is why the axle broke.
If I upgrade my differential to a 9.25, what gearing ratio would I want? Would a 9.25 bolt right in without any modification, or would it not fit? What are the chances another axle breaks if I just replace the broken one? I should add that I don't know if the axle was rusty to begin with. What other options do I have? Any advice will be helpful. Thank you in advance.
