Starting on another 69 road runner build
Found this car sitting for 20 years in an old horse barn
Omaha orange 383 console automatic factory AC, disc brake, PS and tac option.
Doors and fenders and other items are back from Blaster bodywork has started. 50+ years of dings, dents and the like. Good news is there’s no rust repair required all the metal is good
As I won’t be using the original numbers matching 383 on this build. I am setting it aside to be put in the car at sometime possibly in the future but for now I will be building a 505 Cubic inch 440 stroker.
The transmission is a non-numbers matching 727
I’ve had the transmission modified and built by Jed‘s street/strip racing transmissions Spokane Valley Washington.
The following is some description and photos of the modifications.
We first started by completely tearing the transmission down having the case ran through a parts washer and then glass beaded.
We opened up some of the fluid paths by drilling and or chamfering the holes as pictured. The chamfering process is a little touchy as you do not want to damage the land on either side. The chamfer should measure a proximately a quarter of an inch. The other holes in the spline are drilled out just to the edges of the spline itself. As I have come to understand these are minor modifications but every little bit helps.
The transmission had a three pin planetary originally in it. We have swapped it out for a four pin planetary. This allows for more gear contact and engagement.
We cleaned and reused the original rear drum.
When installing the rear and front drums new bands were installed from Cope. CRT.
We’ve installed our billet steel front drum to replace the stock drum. This is a key safety feature also sourced from Cope racing transmissions. CRT
Installed a lighter servo piston. We then replaced the servo retainer and installed the band arm. You can purchase different arm ratios that allow for more band leverage depending on your needs or application. CRT supplied.
