Back in the 70's when we were a little younger a few of my buddies & I were known to occasionally indulge in a street race now & then, a few $$ usually changed hands but honestly it was more about bragging rights than money....

My one buddy had a 68 Charger R/T that had never really lived up to it's expectations (440/727/3.23's) & another buddy had a 69 Chevelle SS396 with the 375HP engine... He'd beaten Bill's Charger on many occasions...

Bill wasn't happy, he also wasn't talking about what he was up to... He'd been talking with a few of the local NHRA SS guys & was having an engine built & picked up some 3.91's...

When the big day came Joe knew nothing & figured he was gonna take Bill's money again, He thought wrong, the Chevelle got a half car at the launch like usual & from there in the past I suspect he'd been sandbagging, this time the Charger started coming around him & he gave it all he could... Wasn't enough, Bill's Charger walked away from him....

The following week Joe started getting calls from guys with Chevelle doors... Turns out Bill took out an ad in the Mini Merchant looking for doors for a 69 Chevelle & listed Joe's number...

Blew them suckers clean off.....:icon_fU::rofl:

I could ask if a Chevelle is really faster than a Charger BUT I remember what a guy I know with a really nice 69 Charger told me when he gets challenged to race: You might beat me but win or lose I get to drive home in a 69 Charger and you don't.

Every US manufacturer back then had fast cars & cars that you expect to be fast that weren't particularly fast due to how they were optioned & simply cause some engines just worked better than others that were supposed to be the same....
If you know anything about Chevies their 375 HP 396's were generally all pretty stout...

No arguing the 69 Charger is a good looking car....

I have a friend with a 69 GTO with a 427 auto. Always runs hot, always having problems, can't keep up with my Hemi 'Cuda and he claims he beat a Hellcat. :realcrazy: I told him he can't beat my 5.7 R/T. Not a chance he can touch a Hellcat.

Back in the day my close friend had a 71 SS 454 4-spd 4.10 cowl hood and I had my 69 Charger 440 727 3.91SG. Was always a close race with us taking turns winning. If he had an auto then he would have probably always won.

...beat my 69 R/T all day long, he wins, I get to drive my beautiful car home and he doesn't.

The difference here, is the 375hp version in the chevelle. It is worlds different than the 325hp version, and probably at least a hundred hp stronger. (Most people forget that the exact same engine was rated 425hp in the 65 vette)
Much better heads than a 440 in stock condition, solid lifter camshaft for more rpm, I'm not surprised a 375hp 396 could put the hurt on a 3.23 geared 440.

Ugly don't bother me none. I drive a 62 savoy.....

This is similar to how a fill in the blank is supposedly faster than a hot snot new Challenger - don't give a ****, they are almost always ugly cars. I like beautiful things, I like looking at them - cars, plants, horses, etc. Beautiful Mopars bring me great joy to look at.

I do have one I think looks pretty good.......

I remember when we were kids, my Dad had a buddy named Bob who had a 70 Hemi GTX. My brother and I would slide under that car and gaze in awe over the big chrome oil pan he had, and pretend we were mechanics. Every week he would come over and him and my Dad would head out to Telegraph Rd for some street racing. Try as he might, he could never beat my Dads Roadrunner. There was just something special about that RR, it was straight off the delivery truck, my Dad never so much as turned a wrench on it. What was done to the car at the factory is lost in time, but my Dad worked with the wife of a Chrysler exec, and at the Christmas party in ‘69 he was talking about the car he wanted to order. She told him to write down (on a napkin) what he wanted, and her husband would follow through with getting the car ordered. 440 6bbl convertible 4 speed, Super TrakPak Dana car, white bucket seat interior, red with a white top. Everybody who ever saw that car was in love with it. I know I’ve shared it before, but it bears sharing again. And his time slip from the Summernationals in 70, where he was runner up in E-pure Stock.

Despite many years of searching, the car has never turned up. My folks got laid off in the winter of 1970, they freaked out and traded the RR in on a 6 cylinder 3 speed 71 Duster. The RR was last seen up on blocks with the motor pulled behind Shelley’s Chicken in old town Plymouth Michigan, sometime in 1973 or thereabouts. My Dad would do anything to get that car back, but we fear that it’s long gone!

Sorry to hear that.
