I am having issues finding a local body/paint shop to trust with my 69 RoadRunner project. Most shops these days just want quick insurance jobs- can't say that I blame them. I am located 30 miles south of Buffalo NY.
I am looking for a quality job at a fair price- I am willing to travel and also willing to wait my turn in line to get things done. This is not a rustbelt rot box. If anyone here is interested or has a recommendation, please shoot me a PM- we can discuss the details.
Thanks for reading-
Bill K

It all depends on how much work is needed. A friend of mine that has a 72 Dart was quoted $10,000 from one of the better shops in our area. Just like MoparBill said, most shops want the easy insurance work. Get em in and move em out.

I just got my car back from paint and very minor body panel smoothing 3 months ago (a few rust bubbles on lower rockers, but no dents or collisions). Here in Northern California I visited 6 reputable shops and also 1 in Visalia near Fresno where my buddy lives. The cheapest quote I got for body and paint, including removing all trim and glass and then replacing it after was $10K. It turned out to be the shop I went with based on several other factors. One other shop quoted me $12K and up, another quoted $15-$20K, but said he couldn't get to it for 6 months (this was a hot rod shop with no insurance work) and the guy in Visalia where things should be cheaper also quoted me $10K. Maaco and Earl Shives will spray it here for around $500. In a year of looking I found no middle prices between $500 and $10K. THEN - after I picked up my car after it was in the shop for 8 months, I run into this guy that refers me to a place only 20 minutes from my house that does all classic cars and they've been in business for only a little over a year. He saw my completed car and tells me he could have done it for $5-$6K. Not sure if he was blowing smoke or if that was an honest not-to-exceed quote. I'm happy with the final $10K result, but I'm still trying to feel good about paying that much...

Seems like you can always find someone who will quote a lower price after the job is done. Easy to throw a lowball number out on a job they obviously won't be doing.

If the shop delivered everything promised for the price they quoted,Then youv'e done very well.Of course the other guy is gunna give you a stupit price because he knows he didn't get that job,but planted a seed for the next need:blob1:

Some shops just charge by the hour,,,,,,,,,,,,,,there's alata hours!

Your not just looking for a bump & paint shop........you are basically looking for a restoration or custom body & paint shop........Big difference between the two.......regular collision/bump & paint shops pretty much have books, manuals, guide lines that tell them how long it takes to replace & paint damaged sections, panels, areas on late model cars....rarely do they "repair" now....mostly just replace and paint and out the door.....
Restoration or custom shops usually have an hourly rate.....the final cost really depends on what they find after they strip the paint off.....what areas need to be replaced and or repaired and what "level" you want the final "product" to look like..........how much you want them to do vs how much you are willing to do..........
Lots of ways to find the right person.......first of all you can't be in a hurry if you want it done right.....check with the local body shop managers and see if they know anyone that does custom work.....another option is to check with any local car clubs.....they usually know either a shop or two or even just local guys that do this sort of work at home or on the "side" if they work at a local bump shop.........
Again , don't be in a hurry...if you find someone check out their work, ask to get phone numbers of other car owner's they have done work for so you can talk to them and most important see the finished job..........
Search the internet for local custom paint shops..........

hope this helps
