What is the usual limit one spends on doing body/paint interior work? Meaning, where do you place the limit (for the average working stiff) on the cost to restore a "driver"? I went to "the guild" up here (they have the tv show Restoration Garage in Canada, Similar to Counting Cars) and as I made it clear I wanted it to be a driver, was quoted 40-60 thousand as it was a candidate for a frame off resto. Now if I'm not mistaken, a frame off resto would net you a car that is virtually better than new when complete...hardly what one(meaning I) would use as a driver. More like a "keep it in the garage and drool over it". If there are any Canadians on here in the Ontario/GTA area that can recommend a shop I'd appreciate the input. Maybe I'm not in the same game mode and 40-60K is the norm?? Wasn't much thought process in order to walk away from that place. I was wondering if they just say that to weed out the tire kickers....

I'm up near Wasaga, Email me. I've got a fellow doing my 65 Satellite [email protected]

I would say any car with significant rust would be approached in that manner and yes it's very time consuming but 40-60 is ALLOT. I was quoted $4,500 for a paint job after I had the metal and body work done "I spent $1,000 on building paint booth and did it myself". It's ridiculous what some of these people want for a restoration. A high profile shop like you speak of will likely want everything that comes out of they're shop to be flawless "they've got a reputation to worry about". Good luck

I'm in Guelph and had to have my entire rear half repainted this year... went to a local collision shop called Majestic since that's where all the old gear heads from cruise night told me to go. Your car doesn't need to go to a "restoration specialist" just find someone with a good reputation and be prepared to wait as anything non -insurance always goes on the back burner.

I would say that quote is a bit high for a driver car. For show quality or near show quality, easily in that ball park. I am on the low end of that, but that is because I have done complete ground up restore, and literally everything, on the car has been restored, repaired, replaced or upgraded, and I have done a lot of the work myself If I had someone do it to the level of detail it is now, and to my standards, easily on the top end of that quote. Driver car should be about half that I would say, but depends on what level of body work and mechanical needs to be done to make it dependable and look good!

Depends on what ya want done got a picture of your car???

I went to Legendary Motor Car up here. They have a TV show that runs in the States. Toured their facility, impressive collection of ...oh I'd guess and the high end of 100 million dollars in cars. They have one of 11 of the Pagani Zonda R race cars on the floor, all carbon fibre, pure eye candy. Anyway, they quoted, for a driver, 150K for paint /body plus any metal or mechanical work is extra I think I'll buy a house with a big garage and do this myself over the next 5 years or whatever.

I was having some body work done To my personal truck after an accident and was curious what the body shop would want to paint my car. With myself doing all the body work, except for wet sanding and taping off, they quoted me 10-12 grand just to paint and buff. I thought that was ridiculous. I'm pretty capable, but that's what some shops get. All said and done, I will be painting myself!

All I am looking for is a shop that knows what they are doing and do quality work. I need full media blast, body and paint, interior rework and some mechanical/electrical stuff. I was prepared for 20K but not 40-60. I want to drive this around without the worry of dirt or the odd stone chip. These guys are quoting a brand new car. If this was a factory Savoy, maybe worth considering, but it's a tubbed/caged street car. So 70k invested, this car would never come close to that value. Makes more sense to put that money into a house with a shop big enough to do this myself.

Hey 4eyed,

I've recently made a great contact with the guy working on my car. He worked for Legendary in Milton for 4 years then went on to a different speed shop in Kitchener (can't remember the name) and went on from there to do another 4 years at Boothill in Erin http://www.boothillauto.ca/ as the lead builder on the 56 Hauler showtruck: http://56hauler.com/

The guys name is Greg Van Leeuwen and he's just started his own shop from home where his rates are reasonable as he's just getting started and he's willing to work within a budget and save you money where possible in a few different ways. His place is in Ariss which is about 10 minutes North of Guelph so approx. an Hour for you from Oakville.

Feel free to shoot me a PM if you're interested in any more info or could arrange a quick phone chat and I can let you know what he's doing on my car.

Mike

Legendary wants 150K for a driver resto??? That's ridiculous. you could buy a #1 Barrett-Jackson car for less than that! Obviously they are not looking for work.

I know....That $150k was just body and paint,so I'm guessing the total would be 170 ish. I guess in their realm, a driver is spot free brand new off the assembly line kinda thing. At that point I wouldn't take the car out of a garage for fear of dust touching it..

That's it. I will never get my car painted. Don't want to sweat the dings and stone chips that are expected on Route 66. I'll travel and put gas in for 20 years on that kind of cash.

There is a guy that had his 68 GTX restored by a guy that does paint and bodywork out of his barn. Total price was $20-$24K but it turned out great and I think that included the engine rebuild also.

I could do a car similar to what I have done to mine in the 20's I think never done it or tried? might even make a little money on it maybe? but I own my own shop outright and all my equipment is bought and paid for, A shop that has hi over head has to charge more plain and simple.

Theirs quicker faster and more easily made money fixing dents than their is in restoration work plain and simple production Shops don't like floor space taken up with long term projects.
