Setting Timing by vacuum :)

HI,
I saw a post a while back about timing by vacuum.. so I thought I'd try it today..I was running 17 HG of vacuum. Using a vacuum gauge I turned it up to max i could receive and it moved up to 18 Hg. max . Well it runs better starts better .. Not really sure it I got anymore power out of it but its running better.. I'll run it a while and see if it has improved any..

Check for pings. The technique I was taught was find max vacuum and then dial back slightly. Distributor curve also needs to be considered. Dead dodge garage on YouTube has excellent videos on timing advance and distributor curves, although the tweaking he does is sort of beyond my ability.

I did this once and did not like how my car reacted. Felt like I lost a lot of power.

I use vacuum sometimes in lieu of a tach to adjust my idle mixture screws but I feel a timing light is best for setting timing.

Using this method you have no idea of your total timing. It may idle good. It may be good at part throttle. But unless you put a light on it to check total advance yu are playing with fire.

On my one car I use the distributor vacuum advance and locked mechanical advance. Connected to manifold vacuum. The vacuum pot is all in by 8”
